I just installed a brand new WD 40GB hard drive in the second slot on my Dimension XPS T600 with Windows XP Home Edition (SP2). At the same time I replaced the DVD ROM with a DVD burner. When I restarted the machine, the operating system did not recognize the new hardware, and it did not recognize the installed CD burner either which was original equipment and was not affected by the hardware change. Both the new DVD burner and the CD burner will open from the front panel, which indicates they are powered correctly, but the device manager does not see them and they are not seen when I try to add new hardware in Windows. Same with the new hard drive. Any ideas as to how to get Windows to recognize the new hardware?
Thanks, I wondered what CS stood for. Now that everything is recognized in the Device Manager and reported as working, I need help in addressing the new drive. When I look on "My Computer" it only shows the C:drive. I was expecting to see the new drive listed as D: but it's not there. Is there any guidance out there to explain how to identify the drive so that it can be written to? Should I post this a new question for others to learn from?
I had a similar problem - thanks for pointing me in the right direction, it is very much appreciated. (To me computers are like cars, when they are working then it is great, when they don't they are a confounded nuisance!! I am a pretty useless mechanic also, however on this occasions with your advice and guidance the problem was solved - mucho thanks.)

Hi, JNH:
All IDE devices should be set to cable select. Open 'er up and reset those, then boot to the BIOS and check that everything is properly recognized.
