You should have gotten the Resources CD along with the XP Reinstallation CD when you received the system from Dell.

 

Why do you need killbox to delete the file. Is it being locked or used by some other application?

 

If you're just trying to permanently remove a file so it can't be recovered, there are probably easier ways to do it.

 

And always include the PC model and version of Windows in your posts. ;)

mea culpa. the most obvious answer was lost on me as i spent 1:50:50 waiting for zone alarm to run an a/v scan.
that's when i made the discovery that an unwanted exe/dll folder could not be deleted. the folders are not in the control panel.
they are in "common folders".
every time i attempt to delete them i get the "cannot delete file/folder. it is being used by another person/program." error message.

i emailed the company involved and since they're being very obtuse i looked around the internet for aid.

i found killbox and they had a pop up informing me that i needed the dell disc...

If you're absolutely sure those files aren't required by some app you need, try booting in Safe Mode (F8 before XP starts to load) and see if you can delete them now.

the folders are:

anonmgmtsvc.exe
anonservicelib.dll

they are from http://www.anonymizer.com/ - for anonymous surfing.

i "think" they are for the anonymizer only...

If that software come with its own uninstaller, try using that. Otherwise, open Add/Remove Programs control panel and see if anonmgmtsvc is listed there. If it is, use the button to uninstall it.

 

Otherwise, try deleting the files/folders in Safe Mode.

how to delete the files in safe mode?

Reboot and press F8 before XP starts to load. Select Safe Mode from the menu.  Your desktop will probably look strange and the screen resolution may be less than normal - doesn't matter.

 

Start> Search>Files and Folders

 

Put in the name of the file or folder. Assuming the search finds it,  right-click the file and select Delete. When you've deleted all the files, shut down normally and restart normally.

do the "safe mode".

1) what, in your opinion, is the most effective FREE anti- spy/malware that will not negatively effect my zonealarm anti- virus/firewall?

verdict?

Everybody has their favorites. I only have ZoneAlarm's free firewall, so I can't tell you what won't conflict with their antiviral software.

 

I previously used Adaware and Spybot Search&Destroy (both free). But Adaware and McAfee VirusScan suddenly started conflicting so I only use Spybot now.

 

You might want to post this question on the Virus/Spyware forum where the experts on these topics hang out.
