Do I really need SP2 on the 1150?
I need to ask if it is absolutely necessary to upgrade to SP2 on my 1150? Neither my desktop at work or my work laptop have been upgraded as our IT guys have not decided it is worth it.
I am running Zone Alarm firewall, Norton 2005 anti-virus, ad aware, and spybot. What is it that sp2 will do for me, other than bring my computer to a crawl, that I need?

i haven't noticed any problems with sp2 on my 5100 -- maybe a slightly slower boot time, but i reset so rarely.
i love the new wireless interface ... but as was said, if you don't use wireless or use a third party utility to control your card, you won't benefit much
go ahead and upgrade (i've done it on 6machines so far without issue)

The only prob I have with SP2 on my Inspiron 1150 (Celeron 2.6Ghz) is that it clocks my Notebook down to 1.3Ghz. In the system properties, it shows 2.6Ghz installed, but the actual clock is running 1.3. There is a patch for this at Dell but it didn't work. I believe the P4 Inspirons are not affected by this but only the Celerons!acoldstarnolds

My problem is it clocks mine down to 311. Might as well be running my old 486.

I would definately live with SP1
Hi,
Recently I removed SP2, since after installation, my Inspiron 5100 runs very slow, very hot (fan is running constantly). After removal of SP2, it is back to normal speed, but fan is running a little often than the state prior to initial SP2 install.
As far as the fan with Inspiron 5100 (512mb, P4, 2.66Ghz), I have noticed many issues on that matter. Since this is my 3rd year with 5100 and I have not had any problem with it prior to SP2 installation, (constant fan running, high temperature, or system down without notice), I don't think I am dealing with the fan problem. Or is it?

Your Fan Constantly Running Problem could be that your Heatsink/Fan needs some good old fashioned Canned Air. Try Blowing Dust out. Dust could have collected in there!Message Edited by hoppergrass on 01-13-2005 11:27 AM

SP2 includes a raft of security changes . . the practical benefits include:
- A intergrated firewall that is effective during boot ( only important if you are on an "always on' broadband connection )
- Improved Wireless management ( important only if you have a wireless card )
- Improved performance over SP1 ( only if properly installed )
- At some point, SP2 will be required to download furure security updates
Before installing sp2 you want to read this and clean up your pc of spyware, trojans and junkware . . junkware being very important! Installing sp2 immediately after a fresh install of XP ( or with a slipstreamed installation disc ) seems to cause far fewer problems than applying it to a system which may be poorly maintained and/or loaded with junk.
