Edition Windows 11 Pro
Version 22H2
Installed on ‎13/‎06/‎2023
OS build 22621.1635
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22641.1000.0

Now the last upadte of windows 11 which is the following fails to install after many attempts

2023-06 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5027231)

It says: something went wrong, don't worry we will try again later. This happened now many many times interrupting my use of the computer. I reset my system recently to its original factory settings. Otherwise I had windows 11 since it initiated, I think 2022. Is it windows fault or my computer's? What to  do?

Thank you for replying.

I am sincerely glad I could be of help!

All you have to do now is hit Next and you will retrieve the unallocated space.

You can find me here any time you need help with your laptop, itäs a small community but I am happy to help out as much as I can.
When you have a specific question, just open a new topic and I will receive a notification, in the worst case I will reply in the evening when I am a little less busy, especially if it's an answer that requires a long explanation, but otherwise it only takes me a couple of hours to answer any request.

About Ubuntu... well it is ultimately up to you, admittedly it has a growing presence in the scientific community, mainly because it's extremely customizable (it's a Linux distribution) while being light, stable and highly secure.
I think it could be useful to know the basics, how to work on it, you don't need to master it, just be able to run it and become familiar with the interface.
It's more common to run into problems than Windows, but Ubuntu Forum and Ask Ubuntu are very helpful tools.

Your laptop was released with full support to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, this means Linux already has all the drivers for your hardware. I think you could easily venture as far as 22.04.2 LTS and it would work. BUT you donät need to install it just to test it, you can download the iso and burn it on a USB drive, even a 8GB pen will do, and run it from said USB pen drive!

  1. Download Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS desktop
  2. Run the freshly downloaded file and write it on a USB pen drive;
  3. Once it's ready, reboot your laptop and as soon as you see the Dell logo splash screen start tapping F12 until you enter the preboot menu: select the USB drive as booting disk;
  4. Ubuntu installation program will start, choose the language, then select TRY UBUNTU
  5. Ubuntu will now boot up and you will be able to test it before even committing to a full install: this way you can make sure that everything works as intended, there are no issues with drivers or devices, and it will only run a little slower (perhaps even laggy) when compared to a full install (USB pen data bandwidth is quite limited when compared to even a traditional harddisk drive).

Test drive it for a few days/weeks, and when you decide you want to give it a go you can make a new partition on your disk and run a full traditional install.

Do you happen to have a screenshot with the error?

Is it possible the message was: "Something didn’t go as planned, No need to worry – undoing changes"?

Anyway there is absolutely nothing wrong with your computer, itäs a quite common problem with Windows Update, usually a conflict between the update and the OS build.
But since you have already proceeded with reimaging your laptop (quite a drastic move if you ask me), there isn't much else to do! The fresh install should have cleared any existing issue. Unless it's still happening?

Whenever you encounter an error with a cumulative update, just skip it, pause the updates for a couple of weeks, and 9 times out of 10 Microsoft will release a new update solving the issue.

If that's not enough you don't need to reinstall the OS to fix it, there are things you can try before going Reagan on your laptop: you can run Windows Update's very own troubleshooter (Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other trouble-shooters > Windows Update), you can empty the folder of any downloaded file and install the update using the redistributable package from Windows Catalog (in case what WU downloaded got corrupted in the process)... There are a few steps you can take.

Thank you so much Tatolino. The message is exactly as you mentioned it. It is still happening causing a loss of time. However I already decided to pause the updates for 3 weeks and will see later. Thank you for the last suggestion about the windows catalog. I will try it later. The reason that I went to reinstall the OS and reset my laotop to factory settings was also an another problem other than the windows update. My HD is actually of 2 Tera, more  than one year ago I decided to make a partition of one tera separated from the windows C. Later I regreted this and I decided to turn back but I did not succeed to do so and eliminate the new partion which remains "un allocated". Some expert advised to reinstall the OS. However even this did not work and finally, i gave up. This how the disk appears now:

You have quite a number of small partitions! If you want to make use of the unallocated space, all you need to do is right-click on the 882GB partition WINDWOS (C:) > Extend volume > Select the unallocated space (should be automatically selected) > click next... That's it!

Screenshot 2023-06-19 114008.pngScreenshot 2023-06-19 114046.pngScreenshot 2023-06-19 114107.pngScreenshot 2023-06-19 114143.png

There is no need to reinstall the OS just for that. Unless you have some bigger issue.

For example is the "Extend volume..." option greyed out? I think that could be the case with your drive, there are too many partitions between C: and the unallocated space.
What you should do is just eliminate them, they are 100% free judging by your screenshot, so no data will be lost. It's probably the by-product of something that was done/attempted during the OS install.

In order to do so, run Command Prompt as administrator (type CMD in Start to find it):

  1. write diskpart and press enter to run the command;
  2. then type in list disk and press enter;
  3. type select disk 0 and hit enter;
  4. type list partition and press enter: this way you'll see a list of partitions, among which you will find the ones you need to eliminate (check the capacity);
  5. make sure you have correctly identified the numbers for the 822MB, 787MB and 653MB partitions (the ones standing in between C: and the unallocated space from your screenshot they should be number 5, 6 and 7 but double check;
  6. type in select partition 5 and press enter;
  7. write delete partition override and press enter;
  8. do the same with the remaining partitions: select partition 6, delete partition overdrive etc

Once you're through with it, you will se a much bigger chunk of unallocated space on the drive, and you can proceed with the same steps I showed you in the screenshots: right-click, extend drive, and so on.

Thank you so much for your help. The first time I find valuable and efficacious help. The actual situation is that in the above screenshot. At least I succeeded to eliminate those extra partitions. Now the extend volume button is not greyed out anymore and the response is in the above screenshot. I have only a last question to ask you because it was not easy to find a helpful person to take advantage of. I'm involved in the medical and scientific fields. Do you think it is important to run UBUNTU beside Windows 11? Is UBUNTU more useful in the scientific field? Once I tried to install it from an iso image that I downloaded on a USB pen from LINUX site and beside Windows. The process failed at such step called the GRUB. However, then I stopped to try this.

Again many many thanks. Is there a way to contact you for any future issues please?
