I have an XPS/Dimension 200/5150C that has been acting up
lately. The operating system is MS XP Media Cewnter Edition
Before this present problem, I was not able to get into the
BIOS by pressing , and rarely could I get into Safe Mode
by pressing .
I now have a problem where the following message appears
right after the splash Dell screen appears”
Windows could not start because the
following file is missing or corrupt:
\Windows\system32\config\system
You can attempt to repair this file
by starting Windows setup using the
original setup CD-ROM. Select ‘r’ at
the first screen to start repair.
There
are two issues:
- Apparently the boot search goes to the hard disk and not to the CD-ROM.
(I do have an MS XP boot disk.)

- The PC did not come with a CD-ROM, but I assume

- that the operating system resides on the hard disk
- in a “hidden” partition.
As noted above, I cannot get into the BIOS using
to change the boot sequence, and neither can I get
into the “hidden” partition using .
How can I resolve this problem?

Hi,
Welcome to the Community. I suggest you can try either of the two options below.
First option:If you have important data on the system,than you can try to recover the corrupted registry by following the Microsoft Support article below:
support.microsoft.com/.../307545
Second Option:If you don't have data or if you have already backed up the data,you may just reinstall the windows either using the Windows XP disk or by trying to access the recovery partion on the system, which will help you to set your system back to the factory settings.
To access the recovery partion hold down Ctrl key and tap F11 on start up(Dell splash screen).
To boot from the Windows XP CD tap F12 on start up (Dell splash screen). and choose cd/dvd drive from the boot menu.

Roshan, Thanks for your reply to my query. I had previuosly downloaded both articles, but the basic issue is that I cannot get any action when I use the or keys nor does anything occur when I hold down the key and tap the key. I notice that the USB keyboard lights up shortly after the flash screen comes up after the progress bar is say 1/3 way along. How can I get the keys to activate the various choices?.. I have tried using the Windows XP boot disk in the CD drive, but the boot disk is not accessed at any time in the process. That is why I wanted to get into the BIOS to set the order of looking for a boot record to the CD-ROM drive. Thanks for your interest.

Hi Masassoit,
I suggest you can try to release flea power from the system and try the F2 and F12 keys.To release flea power, disconnect the main power supply chord from the system,disconnect all peripherals like your printer,external Harddrive,speakers etc.(Except for keyboard and mouse). After doing that press and hold the power button for about 60 seconds (without the power chord connected). Reconnect the power chord only (not the peripherals),start the system and try F2 or F12 and see if that works.

Seems like there perhaps is a timing issue with the first keyboard. I've now taken the first keyboard and put it back in and it works just fine except that it will still not allow access with the action keys. Hmm strange!
