USB problems

My Dimension 8200 has 4 USB ports. One is dead and the three others are ill (difficulties to connect, to print, to scan). Please, what can I do ?

    pape65,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Do you get any errors from the usb? Have you tried reinstalling the chipset drivers?

    DELL-Jesse,

I've no error coming from USB but, when I try to print a document, there is a message saying the document can't be printed, then the printer restart automaticaly several times and use a lot of papers before, sometimes, to succeed to print a complete document. When I need to connect to internet, often my modem is not ready and I must unplug and plug it several time before to get connected.

For the USB port (in the back) I said it's dead, when I plug in a device (scanner or printer) this device is not recognized (message : "unknown device").

No, I did'nt try to reinstall the chipset drivers. I don't know how to do !  Please, can you tell me ?

    DELL-Jesse,

I forgot to tell you something important : all my problems arrived together after a big storm.

My scanner was out of order (cannot switch on) and I was obliged to change its power alimentation.

In the same time, my modem also was out of order and I changed it.

And my printer have got problems since the same date.

    Thank you for your help,

    Alain

    pape65,

The thunderstorm may have fried the devices. When you put in another modem did you install the drivers? The printer may also have gotten damaged by the storm.

    DELL-Jesse,

No, I did'nt reinstall the drivers. But, can you explain me how to install the chipset drivers ?

I think the thunder damaged my USB ports because one doesn't work anymore with any device.

Is there a way to confirm this hypothesis ? Is there a software to test USB ports ?

If USB is damaged, what must I do to repair my computer ?

    pape65,

Run the Dell diags on the machine to see if any hardware is damaged.

    DELL-Jesse,

I did'nt find the Dell diags on my computer.

I used MS software (XP peripherics manager- USB Bus checkers) and this one reply there is no problem with each of the four USB ports. However, one port behind doesn't recognize any periheric.

Where can I find Dell diags. I already said I've no CD "Dell Dimension Resource 1".

Thank you to continue to help me,

    Alain
