Blank Display?
I just bought a Inspiron 9100 and everything has gone well except for this very agrivating problem. I have read problems like this, yet couldn't find a good answer for the situation that I'm in. Everytime that my computer becomes idle or goes into standby, the screen goes blank while the power light goes into a steady glow. When I try to move the mouse or hit the power button to reactiviate my labtop nothing happens. I am then forced to shut down my computer manually and when I reboot it, the screen becomes choppy during the start-up and the labtop stops starting-up. I again have to turn off the computer manually and reboot it. This time the labtop turns on correctly, however some of my icons have been moved. I've ajusted the setting for my power management and read hints on how to stop this problem, but nothing seems to be working. Please reply if you have any ideas that could help me. Thank you.

- It seems to be getting worse. However, now I am not usually having a problem getting my computer out of standby, but instead starting it. During the loading of Windows XP the loading bar becomes very choppy and then the screen changes into a screen full of a variety of dull colored bars and shapes. The screen then lightens to almost white and then stays there. I have to then reboot it where I am redirected to a screen before I start Windows XP that states that I had a problem starting my computer and it gives me several options to fix it. However, none of them seemed to work except the Run Last Known Configuration That Worked, and this only works occasionally and in a random fashion. If you have any feedback or suggestions please reply before this problem get any worse. Thank you
are you sure you've reinstalled everything? as in reformatted your hard disk and reinstalled from fresh?
try following this (from johnallg)
Boot to the XP cd, choose to remove the large partition, remake the large partition, format it (NTFS or FAT32, your choice), then proceed to load XP. Then go to the Dell Downloads (use the Downloads tab above) and get all the drivers, aps, and especially any chipset support (do that one first when running the updates) and load them up. Then load up an AntiVirus program. Then go to the Windows Update site and get all the updates that pertain to how you want your computer.

i'm not sure what the main cause is. but i did have that kind of problem with my old harddisk, the travelstar 5k80 60gb 5400rpm. but now i've upgraded to the travelstar e7k60 40gb 7200rpm, and the problem has yet to resurface.
i'm just guessing but i think that some of the preinstalled stuff by dell, such as the media experience, and whatnots, are or might be affecting it. you may want to backup your important files, reformat your harddisk and reinstall everything without the dell customised stuff. you might find your problem gone.
