Character map

I'm having difficulty using the character map using Windows XP on my Dell 5100.  With NUM Lk on, I'm supposed to be able to "hold the Alt key" and "type a code", for example "0225" to get an "a" with a accent above it.

I do this and it does not work.??

Please help!

don't know why it's not working but you should still be able to manually select from character map then copy to your document.

I'm ássuming you're using the láptop's keyboárd, not án externál...

Hold down the blue Fn key while you do the ált-numeric code.

I guess you cán tell it works...

    Hi,

Thanks for writing!  It still doesn't work!   I'm trying to type an "a" with the accent (Alt+0225) in an e-mail.

It's so easy on my desk top PC.  I pressed the Fn key and Alt+0225, on my laptop, nothing!  I'm very puzzled by this.

    Please send any other ideas!

    Thank you!

    Ok, I'm flummoxed.

If I press and hold the Fn key, then add the Alt key, hold them both down, type 0225 (also known as their Alter Egos MKKI), then release the Fn and Alt keys, it produces a á just pretty as you please.  I tried turning QuickSet off, just to be sure that didn't kill things, and it still worked.

Don't take offense, but here's a couple of simple troubleshooting questions.  1.  Are you typing the 0, 2, and 5 on the M, K and I keys?  I know you said "numeric keypad" at the beginning, but I gotta start simple.  2.  Are you holding down both the Fn and Alt keys the whole time?  It's one of those weird things you have to do with a laptop, where simply pressing and releasing the Fn key, then doing the Alt-whatever, doesn't work.  I use this trick all the time on these fora to talk about temperatures, where the Alt-167 key makes the º symbol.  I also use the upside-down question mark to be a smart-aleck on questions to friends.  ¿Entiende?  Also, my favorite anonymous forum name wouldn't work without Alt-154 - gotta do the Übergeek correctly!

Have you tried this in Word, or in Notepad?  Maybe it's your e-mail package?  This is called groping in the dark, in case you don't recognize it...

If none of these work, danged if I know!  Good luck!

Why not just select the character from Start-Accessories-System Tools-Character Map, and copy and paste?  You can create shortcut keys to open the character map.

Well, RandyB, I'm one of those throwbacks who'd rather type than click.  I use keychords for everything I can, and find them a lot faster and more efficient than mouse-clicking through several layers of Microsloth bloatware to find what I want.  Heck, I'll still spawn a DOS-prompt emulator window for file copies and searches.  For me, it's much easier to go Alt-167 to get a º symbol rather than hunt it down in a table.  For those things I don't use very often, I have an ancient Post-it taped to my monitor with the ASCII codes for the oddball characters.

Just call me a command-line bigot!  More people consider me nuts than those who consider me sane.

I would agree with Glen, it's much easier to type than copy and paste.  I type a lot of characters with diacritical marks and this way (Fn key, alt key then the code) I can just keep on typing.  A friend had told me about copying the characters then pasting them but typing is much easier and now thanks to Glen I know how to do that correctly!

Ok.  I guess, because I use non-standard characters so little - it's not an issue for me. I'm just a mouse_man at heart, anyway. I've had mice for years and they've never bitten me or made a mess and I have never had to feed them! Heck; I've even chopped off their tails and they didn't complain!
