My Inspiron 17RN-4823 laptop froze on the welcome screen

and after trying to reboot a couple of times
I ran the diagnostic test and got this message.

Error Code 2000-0142
Validation 50115
Msg:Hard Drive 0 - S?N 5VENMQCX,self test unsuccessful. Status = 7

I checked and the Dell web site. Read to try disconnecting and reconnecting and all sorts of other stuff I don't understand.
I was willing to do a System Restore, but if my hard drive is out of commission I would think the SR would not make a difference?
