M1330 Can't write Dual Layer DVDs - possibly firmware update req?

I get 'Power Calibration Error' when I try to write a DVD+R DL disk.
I've tried two brands, so don't think that's the problem (though it could still be).

A friend has suggested it could be the firmware. How can I check what firmware I'm using and how do I update it if it's not the latest?

Thanks.

Whats yr drive Matsuhita..........if so try burning with a DVD-RAM DL optical media.

These drives work best when the media is DVD RAM  & not DVD ROM whether DL.

Most verstaile drives rae made by Toshiba & Sony.

DVD RAM drives have their own pros but I wont personally burn a DL DVDROM on a DVD RAM unless I have that particular media.

Meaning trying to burn a DVDROM DL on a DVD-RAM drive.

I am using CDburnerXP (vista edition) and have also tried on vista's built in software.
I'm getting told by the people I work with that it's probably dodgy media :-(

Didn't your noteboook come with some Roxio software? Why not try that?

I've just tried the disk in another (brand new) DL drive and I get 'Power Calibration Error' also, I'm guessing that it's dodgy media that's the problem now.

I'll have to take them back and see if I can get a refund.
I've not tried Roxio though, the built in software failed so I assumed it's not specific to the SW. I'll try Roxio too, just in case.

When I run Roxio Creator DE it shows only ROM discs.  In addition, in the owners manual it show that it will not wriite to DVD -R DL discs, only +R.

From what I have seen, there are a few things that can cause this.

    1. Bad media

    2. Dust

    3. Upgrde firmware.

I believe the drive is a Matsuhita UJ 857G, you can verify this via the device manager. The only place I can find that may have the firmware update is Panasonic. You will have to email them with all pertinent information.

FWIW: I just burned three DL discs using Memorex DVD+R DL, Part number 3202 5647
