noise...help.?
have a 2 weeks old xps M1210. it was quiet, cool and wonderful for the 1st week. 2nd week now, as it runss hotter (not too hot just warmed up) I can hear this very faint and low low but nevertheless high pitched noise coming from bottom of the laptop. I lift it up, i hear this high pitched noises, it is not loud at all, can not be heard in public places, only in closed quiet roomss but i leave my laptop on 24/7.. so sleep is disturbed....
I can hear the noise coming from the memory slot opening. But laptop seem to be operating fine. Talked to XPS support, the guys says there is no problem, this is because the new CPU multi task more and makes more noise than before.
I never heard this one before. noise from a non-moving part.... and I have owned 10-15 laptops some of them duo core..
I was guessing hard drive problem or if not problem, hard drive noises...
anyone experienced or can shed some light to this problem?
Greatly appreciated...............
Howard

thx, i did a test, ran the virus scan which require full cpu power, and while its running the high pitch noise is gone. so it really is because of this power conservation thing and resonance issue. I alamost wanted to return it and get a 2000 sony which i know is quiet as a tomb for sure, but now i knowo my laptop is snot gonna break, i might just keep it and save 700 bucks. Thanks again for the insight.PS: That new M1330 looks attractiveHoward911s

thx all for the reply, i feel much better that its not technically broken, if not very annoying, especially i love leaving it on at night when i sleep which i have not bee able to. I was thinkinga bout buying the sony vaio TX series (core solo, dont have this problem , but very slow cause its 1 core and 1 GB) or the soony sz 430 , whichis core 2 duo, my friend has it, does not have this problem at all, very quiet.Either those 2 which would cost me 6 - 800 bucks more or just eat the noise and keep the xps..(im still within return period) but only a few days left to return, not sure what to do now.......I wanted the M1330, but the built time is over 1 month, i cant wait that long.. sigh...any sugggestions?- Was the Sony you looked at using a core 2 duo processor?I've seen other core 2 duo laptops, from Toshiba and Asus and they all made the exact same squealing noise.I think it's a much wider problem than people realise, especially as it seems to be affecting all of the core 2 duo laptops Ive come across anyway.
- I havent had a chance to look at the M1330 yet - but is that also using a Core 2 Duo? If so, then I dare say it's going to have the exact same problem.I went through the same dilema when I got mine back in March. In the end I've kept it - I just use that RMclock utility when I want to shut that noise up.The other complaint I have about this laptop is the speakers. Mine reasonate and vibrate with certain frequencies in the music. I had the laptop replaced, and it was the same on both of them.

gotcha, so either i just chooose to get used to it and keep it or get another brand, nevermind tryiing to fix it...- I would not waste my time trying to get it "fixed" no.The reason for this, is I have already seen and read tooooo many examples of people having either the entire laptop, motherboard, or CPU replaced - and it doesnt make a difference. So save yourself the heartache.Do you have any vibrating/reasonating from your speakers when playing music?
