Have you read the following thread?

Make sure you have updated your Audio drivers and have the latest bios installed. Might also want to check to see if Yahoo messenger is giving you fits like one user experienced.

Yahoo messenger might just be the problem. I installed it yesterday and that was when i started noticing the sound went away. Although, i never really tried to use the sound before that so I dont know when exactly the problem started.
I have the latest BIOS and audio drivers. I'll add my service tag to my info and post again if the problem doesn't resolve itself.

The sound worked fine after I uninstalled yahoo, but it died again today when i used AIM for webcamming. It seems like these IDT drivers don't like instant messenging programs when they require audio.
Dell needs to contact IDT and tell them to fix this major issue. I'm done with this garbage for now. I'll either look for original Microsoft audio drivers or this laptop is going back. The sad part is, the sound isn't even the only problem with these studio 15s.

So if I understand this correctly, sound was working fine on the Studio system *until* you had installed either Yahoo Messenger or Aim. Can you tell me which specific versions of the software above you had tried to installed on your system?
Thanks!I'm also facing the problem with Yahoo Messenger. I'll try the Yahoo Messenger for Vista and see.
I'm also facing the same Audio loss issue with GTalk.
Whenever I log into Gtalk, audio on my laptop stops working. It does not hurt to simply leave Gtalk installed on my laptop. Only when I log into Gtalk, audio stops.
I'm experiencing the exact same problem only with windows live messenger and ICQ. Audio works fine untill one of these softwares makes a sound, then some sort of collision occurs and the audio driver stops working although everything looks ok in the device manager. The only way to get audio to work again is by restarting the system.
I think I've found a temporary solution for the problem.
I simply disabled all the sounds in my windows live messenger and ICQ.
I've been giving it quite some time and so far it's working just fine.
I know this is not the best but still losing sounds in a couple of softwares is better than losing them all, so I guess I'm gonna stick to that, at least till those guys come up with a better solution.

bump, seems like several people are getting this.
copied from other thread;
"I have the same problem. The sound works when the system is first booted, but randomly gives out after a while. The only temporary solution is to restart. I've updated the audio drivers, so what gives?"
