Our company purchased a dimension 8400 with a E193FP 19" LCD not ultrasharp. Initially hooked it up to my old MS 2000 workstation before i was able to setup the new 8400. Right away i noticed aweful image quality and horible text quality. We also have a viewsonic VX800 in the office and compared the two and without any doubt the viewsonic is better. Then hooked it up to my 8400 and image quality is good but text quality is VERY poor. I turned on cleartype but that doesnt really fix the problem, it masks it. Not all text is displayed in cleartype. Besides i dont like cleartype. I called Dell and they sent me another E193FP and the new one initally looked GREAT. The replacement is noticably brighter at the same settings. I have a DVI adapter and hooked both monitors up at the same time to compare. After a little while the new one looked just as bad as the old one just a little brighter.
Question is: Will the 19" dell ultrasharp fix the aweful text quality or should I forget about dell LCD's and go with a viewsonic or another brand?
The E193FP is totally unusable to me. Make me lightheaded.
I am afraid it looks like this is common as I have the same problem as yourself. I have just logged the issue and asked for a replacement as the quality of the E193FP I received is terrible. Graphics appear okay but text looks like it is ghosted, turn on cleartype and you get red or blue ghost lines intermittently. To correct it I tried to adjust the brightness, which by default blinds you, and the contrast but when you get the contrast right for text all the scroll bars etc fade into the background.
Dell ought to replace this monitor with the cheaper ones we have at work which are far superior quality at 2/3rds the price.
I called the first time and got someone in India who i could not understand, so i called our rep and he put me into the same queue but this time i got an american (thank you god!) and he was willing to take this peice of junk LCD off my hands and upgrade me to the 19" ultrasharp. I have not received the ultrasharp yet and will post the results here when i get it. They apparently didnt have to upgrade me since i got the 19" LCD on a promotion and gave me a really good deal. So kudos to Dell for trying their best to fix the problem. Plus it was the right thing to do since about every peice of computer equipment in our office has the word Dell on it, and since the monitor was unusable.
I have had the same issues with my E193FP but Dell refused to upgrade me to the ultrasharp (they offered me an $85 credit if I returned my display but I would have to pay shipping on the new monitor...). I haven't been able to get through on the phone other than once, but email support has at least been responsive. I have had a new display shipped to me (just as bad as the old one) and now they are replacing the video card on site. Seems like it would be cheaper for them to upgrade me. Is the ultrasharp any better? Presumably the DVI input helps...
I have not received the ultrasharp yet. It was on backorder and is expected to ship sometime next week. Our rep said that it would fix the problem. Basically the dell customer care guy gave us retail credit for the lowend LCD and we had to pay the difference to upgrade to the ultrasharp. Which was the only good solution to the problem. Its obvious that dell knows these are bad monitors and was trying to offload them by giving them away with the computer. The customer care guy told me "what do you expect for free". Well i honestly didnt expect ultrasharp performance but i didnt get something even remotely colse to usable.
We have another (viewsonic) LCD at our office and i plugged it in DVI and VGA and noticed little to no difference. Thats my expirience.
Be firm not rude with the customer care people and threaten to boycot dell and they will bend. If they dont bend, BOYCOT dell. Thats what i would do. I have also found it makes a big difference WHO you talk to, some people like to deal, others dont. I have found the Indias dont deal at all.
Well I have received my replacement E193FP and its just as bad as the original. When are Dell going to realise this monitor is rubbish, even when compared with cheaper alternatives from other suppliers. I will be contacting Dell today and asking to upgrade to the Ultrasharp monitor (paying the difference) but I don't hold out much hope. I am going to write to the Trading Standards about the quality of the monitor not being fit for purpose as it makes me feel physically sick when looking at the screen for more than 1/2 hour, I have even asked other friends etc to check its not just me and they agree the monitor bleeds and no matter what you alter it can not be corrected.
Additionally if I am asked once more by the guys in India to do the checks I shall scream, I am not an idiot, as I am a technical support manager myself, and don't like being treated as one. I know this is a home computer but I purchased it after being happy with Dell at work, but this is now wearing my patience and I feel I can no longer recommend Dell to my organisation.
I'll let you all know how I get on but I don't hold out any hope as my problem does not appear to be on the support script they all read out.
I have had to call Dell 3 times now to try to fix this problem. Apparently it wasnt "approved" so what did they do? They sent me ANOTHER E193FP. I called them back and said it was totally unacceptable and this lady said she would try to get it sent through. So what if it was "Free". It is unusable as i have the same problem you do. It gives me headaches to look at it. I have literally spent about 6 hour of company time that cannot be billed to a project and we have had to eat that time to try to fix this problem. At the rate my employer charges for this time, dell would have to give us a whole new system to make up for it. So i dont think we are asking too much for an upgrade.
Dell....I have been extremly patient with your people, never have i once raised my voice. But i will not stand for this one. Its obvious you tried to pawn off some junk equipment as being "FREE". I/We have been very loyal customers and i think we deserve some restitution. Just about everything in our office, at my house, and many of my friends/families houses says "Dell" on it.
Well I have accepted a refund from the guys in India, though yet to find out how much, and have ordered the Ultrasharp 19" Monitor. Why they couldn't replace it and let me pay the difference I don't know, but I have received the Ultrasharp today and its brilliant. You are supplied with VGA and DVI cables as well as USB cable. The centre speaker for the 5.1 Dell speaker system fits, even though the guys in India told me it wouldn't. The picture quality and refresh rate is fantastic and I can only say how pleased I am. I am using the DVI connection from my Radeon X800 XT to the monitor so not sure if that helps too. Text is crisp and clear even without ClearType, thank goodness because I hate ClearType, and the brightness and colour settings are really good. So to all, my advice is forget the E193FP and upgrade to the 1905FP. Just got to wait and find out how much Dell refund me on my credit card after Christmas.
Oh a note to Dell, stop the support guys in India telling me what rating I should give them, I will decide myself when asked to a complete customer satisfaction card, I don't need to be told !
It finally came. I got my 1905FP today and it looks great. The text is not all distorted like on the E1903FP. Love the stand too. Kudos to dell for fixing the problem.
I too received the E193FP free with my 8400 a few months ago and the text was horrible as each of you have described. RMA'ed the first one and the replacement was the same. I tried to get them to upgrade to the Ultrasharp but they would not do it. They only wanted to give me $68 credit if I returned it. They finally ended up giving me a $100 credit to keep it. It's a really poor monitor. The only thing I can use it for is gaming where I only care about the graphics. Dell did a really poor job handling this problem. I may try to get a warranty replacement if they get the quality to where it should be.
"They" (meaning ordinary people) say that dell treats their home customers as well as their biz customers. Obviously this is NOT true. I didnt have to do a whole lot to get them to give me a 100% credit for the E193FP and all i had to do was pay an extra 200 bucks to get the ultrasharp. It took me 3 tries but they finally caved in. I also called my rep and he said in a nutshell do not take no for an answer. While our company doesnt do a ton a biz with dell, we proportionally buy ALOT of stuff from dell of a compnay our size compared to most.
Dell should not treat their home customers worse then their biz customers, the reality is they do.
My advise is to keep trying and not taking no for an answer. This monitor is unusable. Its my job to stare at this screen for 8 hours a day. I cannot do that with the E193FP.
