Crossover Network problem---"limited or no connectivity"
Hey Steve, are ya up to a challenge?
Here is my setup:
Inspiron 8000 running XP HomeSP1
Dimension 3000 running XP HomeSP2----it's connected to my printer so I made it the host.
Both use Dial Up---no DSL or Cable available.
These are connected directly together with a crossover cable.
Now the problem:
From the laptop in "My Network Places" I can see the Desktop (should the laptop also show here?) and I can send files and folders to the desktop. If I go to the Desktop and put files into the SharedDocs folder I can then bring them back from the laptop.
I can also print from the laptop.
The Network icon shows that I have a "local area connection"
From the desktop in "My Network Places" I see only its own Network but not the laptop's.
The desktop Network icon shows "this connection has limited or no connectivity".
I am able to ping each computer from the other. I have enabled File and Printer Sharing on both. I have turned off the firewall on the SP1 laptop and set the firewall exceptions on the SP2 desktop.
Both computers have auto configured IP addresses, and both have the identical Sub Netmask (I have no idea what this means).
Any thoughts on why I can't "see" the laptop from the desktop, and why does the desktop give me that "limited connectivity" message?
One last thought, these computers have very similar names, Walts8000 and Walts3000
(sorry for the lack of imagination). Could this cause any grief?
I manually configured the computers with the static ip adresses and the subnet mask as you advised. The desktop Network icon now shows "local area connection". No more "limited connectivity". Hooray!!
However on both computers when I open My Network Places > Entire Network > Microsoft Windows Network > Mshome I still see only my desktop listed.
Any more magic tricks?
Walt
On the laptop I only have Norton Anti Virus installed. I've made sure the lan firewall is turned off.
On the desktop I do have The McAfee Security Center but I have turned it off and am just using the Windows firewall on which I have configured the exceptions.
Just a thought, on the laptop I have installed Both AdAware and Microsoft's spyware program. Do you think either of them could be causing the problem?
The antispyware programs should not be causing the problem. Are you sure File and Printer Sharing is enabled on the laptop and you have designated drives and/or folders as shared resources?
On the desktop when I select "sharing and security" on a drive or folder I get into the Shared Documents Properties window. I can then choose to "share this folder on a network". I then can see these folders in Windows Explorer showing the shared symbol.
On the laptop I go through the same steps and choose "share this folder" etc. I receive a Sharing error message that says:
"an error occured while trying to share (any drive or folder I choose). The Server service is not started. The shared resource was not created at this time"
To Steve, and anyone who has been following this saga.
Here is how I solved the problem. I noticed the error message mentioned "Server" but I had no idea what that meant. As I was reading posts in the Wireless Forum I saw a reference to "services.msc", I looked into it and found a heading for Server and it was Disabled (don't know why). So I enabled it......PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!

Have you tried assigning each computer a static ip address (102.168.1.1 & 192.168.1.2 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0)?
