Need Help with Home Network

I successfully set up a cable modem and home Wireless G network a couple of months ago and everything has worked fine until yesterday.

Main computer (A) Dell 4600 - Windows XP  wired to router.  Other computer, Toshiba Satellite -  Windows XP. Internet and file and printer sharing all worked properly and all shared documents were visible in "My Network Places" on both computers.

Logged on main computer yesterday and no shared documents shown in "My Network Places". Logged onto Computer B and only B's shared documents were listed. Also, even though B was showing "printer connected and ready", it would not actually print.

Fixes tried.

1. Re-ran network setup wizard on each computer.

2. Ran Network Troubleshooter on Computer A and it failed the ping test for its own IP address. I repeated this manually using the Run>command>Ping xxx.xxx.x.xxx (actual IP address) and it tried 3 times but failed.

3. Checked all hardware connections.

4. Uninstalled Network Adaptor (Intel RRO 100) sofware and reinstalled from Dell installation disc.

5. Ran full spyware and virus scan.

6. Restored computer to a time I knew all was working properly.

None of the above has solved the problem.

Further: If I go to My Network Places and click "Entire Network" and then on "Microsoft Windows Network",  the computer hangs for a minute or so and then the "MSHome" icon appears. If I click on it, the computer again hangs for a minute a so and then gives me the following error message:

"MSHome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact your network administrator."

Would appreciate any ideas of what the problem may be. Incidentally, I can browse the Internet OK from both computers.

Make sure the Windows XP firewall is disabled.  File and Printer sharing will not work if it is enabled. If you are running any third party firewalls, temporarily disable them until the problem is solved.  Reset the whole system by turning everything off.  Turn on the braodband modem (if you have one) first, wait for 5 minutes, then turn on the router, wait for another minute, then turn on the computers.   If none of this works, try running lspfix by downloading it from the following location:

Thanks Steve. I already had firewall disabled on both computers. The link you provided seems to be for those having Internet connection problems, but I will give it a try anyway.

THANK YOU for your suggestion about disabling the XP firewall when trying to share a printer or a drive/folder between computers.  I found that it only works after restarting the computers.

Followup question - should I leave the XP firewall turned off and depend upon the hardware firewall in the Dell TrueMobile 2300 Router.  Is this safe?

I suggest you turn off the XP firewall on each computer. Then install third-party firewalls on each computer on the network. When you configure those firewalls make sure you open the correct range of IP addresses, to allow the computers to communicate. That was my problem......I had reinstalled my Norton firewall and neglected to configure it properly. That cost me $95 plus tax to have somebody come to the house to do it correctly!
