I have a Dell Dimension 3000 running WinXp and a Dell Dimension XPS running Win98.
I have a wireless network using a direct connection for DSL on the 3000 and a wireless adapter on the XPS through a Westell Gateway Router.
I've been able to setup for sharing folders from 98 to XP, which showup on the My Network Places and can open them to show thier directories, but I cannot open the folders to actually operate. The message I get is that certain files cannot be located (ones that are in Win98 and I can actually find them in the shared files).
The folders (applications) that I'm trying to use via sharing are several that won't install on WinXP, even using the compatibility function. (No driver for XP available.)
Have been looking for a detailed instruction on how to properly setup for sharing as I'm obviously not doing something correctly; or, is it not possible to share between WinXP and Win98.
A second question - I've d/l'd several driver files from Driverguide.com that are supposed to be compatible in XP. After extracting with WinZip, I then attempt to open the application and get a message stating that "cannot operate a program from another operating system". Tried going through the compatibility function, but it still failed.
Note that you cannot run programs installed on another computer across the network. You can open files, share files, copy files back and forth, but you cannot run a program unless it is actually installed on the computer on which you are working. The reason for this is that programs must be installed so that all necessary entries are made in the Windows registry. This would still be true, even if you had the same version of Windows on both computers.
Thanks Steve. I thought this might be the problem, but wasn't completely certain.
Another question, if I may. If I install a second hard drive with Win98 and the applications I want to use installed, will I be able to access and run the programs? Also, can you suggest a dual boot utility that I can use, or how does two seperate hard drives with different OS' work?
If you install Windows 98 on a second hard drive, then you will be able to run any programs installed in Windows 98 if you boot to Windows 98. They will not run from Windows XP unless they are installed in XP.
Dual booting is possible, but without a Utility, Windows 98 would have to be the first system installed. I believe that Symantec's Partition Magic has a dual boot utility, but I am no expert in dual booting. You should probably post this question on the Software - Windows XP forum where you are more likely to get an answer from someone that can claim to have some expertise or experience.
