Disk Prevention Capacity

I have just setup a new DDP within Dells MDSM.

Within this DDP I want to add more than one of my 11 disks to the Prevention capacity but for some reason it only allows me to only have 1 why is this?

The disks in the new pool are 1.8TB 10k Harddrives

EDIT: San is a MD3200i with an expansion shelf

    Hello ItsFudd

When you are trying to add a new drive to your Preservation Capacity do you have your DDP that you created selected or no? Also are you following the steps in the admin guide on page 101? http://downloads.dell.com/Manuals/common/md32xx_md36xx_administrator%20guide_en%20us.pdf

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Thanks for the guide, I have followed the guide and it was similar to what I was doing before but when I want to allocate 3 and press OK everything seems fine but when I go in to check only one is allocated.

I don't receive any errors when pressing OK but my changes just don't apply. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. Is there another place where I need to save and confirm changes?

    Thanks

    Michael

    Hello Michael,

No there is not any other place to set Preservation Capacity. You set Preservation Capacity when you create your disk pool & can be changed as outlined in the link I sent you. Have you tried to logout of MDSM & log back in to see if the changes appear? Also what version of firmware are you running on your MD3200i?

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

The current firmware on the enclosures are 1.05 and I have disconnected from the manager and reconnected and there is no visual glitch. is it worth completely removing the Disk pool and re creating it?

I have deleted the virtual disk and tried that and still fails, I have also deleted and recreated the disk pool to attempt to allow more disk prevention to be allocated. Is there a limit to the amount of disk prevention depending on the disks as I can lower it to 0 and increase up to one but not any higher so I feel as if there is a cap which is preventing from increase my disk prevention capacity.

Also I have a different disk pool and I can increase the disk prevention capacity to 3 even though it is currently set to 2 so I don't think there is a firmware issue.

    Hello Michael,

I did some checking and there is a limit to the # of drives that you can add to your Preservation Capacity. Since you only have 11 drives in the pool the max is 1 drive for Preservation Capacity. The amount of preservation capacity to be utilized by a Dynamic Disk Pool is fixed depending on the number of drives that were created within the pool. That is why you only have the option of using 1 disk.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

That is great, but i am still not sure how many disks I need for a prevention capacity of 3 as I still don't understand how the ratio works.
