I have a T3610 workstation, working quite fine but wanted to speed it up.
So I installed an SSD which worked fine for data, but wanted a fresh windows install on it for fast boot.
So I set up an USB stick to install a fresh windows on the SSD, keeping my previous HDD for data.
There was a conflict between legacy bios and my USB stick so I switched to UEFI mode, and gave priority to USB.
Started the install and then...nothing...black screen
When I start the computer, I have a blinking white dash, then the dell logo, and another blinking white dash, and it remains like that (for eternity I suppose).
I tried to access BIOS via F2, on the Dell logo, it says something like "preparing to enter setup" (in yellow) but nothing happens and it switch to the white dash.
I tried to bring back the bios to default by removing the power cord, removing the battery and pushing the start button 20 second, and wait overnight before putting anything back but nothing more.
I also tried with my previous HDD alone (which has the untouched windows install that should work).
In fact it looks like it is trying to boot from USB, but I can't enter the bios to tell it to try to boot from HDD or SSD. Is there another way to "reboot" the bios, or to update the bios?

I have a very similar issue now with a T3610 that was running WIN10 PRO 64bit, upgraded from WIN7 PRO 64. It will not even complete the POST, stops at diag. lights 1,2,3 - solid orange and the power button solid white. This happened during an upgrade from WIN 7 64 to WIN 10; following from a down grade to WIN7 when WIN 10 failed and would not recover using WIN RE nor using the USB version to repair. I tried every option found on the forums of Dell and Microsoft to recover including a new EFI set of boot files. Eventually I had to downgrade to the software the system originally shipped with (WIN7 64 downloaded from Dell) but not before having to go through an ownership transfer; which I will say was painless and quite easy with Dell. Once WIN 7 was installed and drivers updated I used it in WIN 7 happily for a week. My daughter then complained that her online game would not run in WIN7 so I downloaded an image of WIN10 from Microsoft to upgrade back. I had all of the chipset drivers and storage drivers for both OSs at the ready and got as far as loading the F6 RAID drivers (was using the onboard SATA AHCI controller in the previous WIN10 installation on this T3610 [ did I mention I have two identical Precision T3610s the other is running a single SSD in RAID mode, but no RAID]) however, since the systems both shiped with RAID enabled, and the BIOS defaults to RAID for SATA, I wanted to avoid any mishaps. I configured two 256 GB SSDs into a RAID 0 controlled by the RSTe and used it for another two days before saying goodbye to WIN7, during which there were no issues at all. I set the boot to UEFI / secure boot disabled/ with boot order: 1. UEFI USB | 2.Windows boot manager | 3. UEFI hard drive third, and just to be certain I used F12 to get the one time boot menu and forced the UEFI USB as the boot device. Everything went smooth verified that the mobo RAID controller recognized the volume with Ctrl - I and exited that monitoring all the way up to the installation of the F6 drivers; I set the upgrade running and went to bed. I woke to a black screen with the fans running, power button light solid white and no indication that anything was wrong with the mobo or memory I assumed it was a graphics card issue, but I wanted to try to recover the installation with the USB drive. Forced a restart with the poser button as there was no response from cntl-alt-del, and ....No-JOY it resulted in the same solid white power button, fans running and black screen. Tried to force WINRE shutting off with power button three times to no avail. I have tried removing all peripherals, all memory except one, and except two (dual controller/three channel) with 16 GB of DDR3 at 1866 (4 x 4GB), I have tried different mem modules in the first and first two slots, removed the graphics card, nothing changes the fact that it does not complete POST and hangs at the three lights (1,2,3, illuminated) and power button solid white.,
The Service manual says this is a reserved or spare diagnostic code in the pre-POST environment so what does that mean? After POST it is also unclear what this means, possible memory failure? It does not appear to be the case since I have tried switching all modules for all others.
I have attempted to update the bios with a USB drive, per the instructions provided on the Dell.ca support page, to no avail. I have NO VIDEO therefore I cannot be certain is there was any updating happening at all. As I mentioned the diagnostic lights stop during POST at as quoted from the service manual or some other fairly useful document:
Solid White | System is in S0 state. This is the normal power states of a functioning machine. The BIOS will turn the LED to this states to indicate it has started fetching op-codes.|
...however; the diagnostic lights indicate one of the following:
Pb14 | |1,2,3 - Solid |Reserved | - | Reserved |
... or if POST has completed but has not flashed all four diagnostic light yet the code is supposed to indicate:
S14 | | 1,2,3 | POV | Other post-video activity | Indicates routine system activity subsequent to video initialization. | Troubleshoot as per the error message onscreen
There is no message on the screen that I can read since there is not video. The following is the exact sequence of diagnostic lights on the front panel after the power button is pressed:
- [1,2 dark] lights 3,4 ON-amber & power button solid white rear PS light is on and green as per usual this lasts several seconds;
- HD light flickers followed by diag. light 3-ON amber for a few seconds;
- lights 1,2,3 ON-amber and it just hangs that way no matter what I have tried to do or no matter what is, or is not, plugged in to the mobo.
Has anyone ever come across this? Does anyone have any further suggestions on what I can do short of replacing the motherboard?
There is more information leading up to this situation that resulted in the downgrade to WIN7 in the first place, that may be instructive; if you can handle a little of my poor memory clouding the recent past.
First please note the following general spec.s:
Precision T-3610 (#1) -Intel C602 (C600/X79) - Xeon E5-1620 v2 (four cores) -16GB of DDR3 at 1866 and NVIDIA K2000 GPU and 256Gb Samsung SSD at 6Gb/s + 256GB ADATA at 6Gb/s running in (Bios specified) AHCI mode on Integrated Intel AHCI chipset SATA controller (2 x 6Gb/s, 4 x 3.0Gb/s) - SW RAID 0/1/5/10, running WIN10 PRO 64bit.
Precision T-3610 (#2)-Intel C602(C600/X79) - Xeon E5-1620 v2 (four cores) -16GB of DDR3 at 1866 and NVIDIA K2000 GPU and 256Gb Samsung SSD at 6Gb/s + 750GB Hitachi Optical DD at 3Gb/s plugged into the other 6Gb/s capable SATA port running on Integrated Intel AHCI chipset SATA controller (2 x 6Gb/s, 4 x 3.0Gb/s) - SW RAID 0/1/5/10 with the Bios in SATA RAID mode [ the way it came from Dell] , running WIN10 PRO 64bit.
The first Black screen I received happened when I was retrieving some files over the home network from the other T3610 which was running a single SSD in RAID mode (but no RAID volume) as the system disk, and a single 750GB optical for storage. My daughter was playing an online game at the time, graphic card intensive type affair and she went to get a drink so I thought I would get in and out of her system quickly and get the 500MB of files I needed. She returned before I had finished copying the files and started her game again and as soon as I hit save my screen went black and no input device would noticeably change the state. I was eventually able to get in to the WINRE using a WIN10 recovery USB from Windows, but not before the black screen turned into a Blue screen with the message "Critical Process Died" ... or something similar. After trying every possible troubleshooting option that started with using a system restore point from the day previous, all the way to copying the boot files from my other T-3610 which did not result in anything beyond seeing the safe mode briefly only to have another BSOD.
After all of the two days of panic, I remembered reading a bulletin from NVIDIA at the last graphics card update that warned specifically about Workstations in AHCI accessing other drives running in RAID and also running NVIDIA QUADRO graphics cards. Of which there was a significant resulting risk of failures due to some quirk of the NVIDIA RAID drivers or something along those lines. I somehow was led to a post by a user stating that he or she had to replace their SSDs after an experience VERY, VERY, similar to my first black screen. I of course did not remember this bulletin I skimmed through until after all of this transpired, but I did remember making a mental note not to access the other T3610 when anyone was actively playing games or using software that required the GPU. I have no one to blame but myself and of course there is no longer any warrante left on these machines, but my daughters each love their own workstation computers so dearly that I will do whatever it takes to get this one fixed rather than buying a newer mother board.
I did try to reply to the private message however, it resulted in a bounce back. It is not under warranty any longer, but if it will help to have the service tag I will try to reply once again.
