Dell 948 error - clear carrier jam - how?

I have opened every thing on my Dell 948 and there is no paper jammed. I turn it on and there is a loud snap noise and then error message appers to clear carrier jam and press the check. After pressing the check, in 5 seconds the loud snap again. Print requests disappear without any print. Can't find disscussion in manual on this. And I just bought 6 ink cartridges - probably cost more than a new printer!

Thanks - Dave : <ADMIN NOTE:Email id removed per privacy policy>

    Dave,

If you unplug the printer from the wall. Then remove the power brick from the back of the printer for 60 seconds. This will reset any error messages the printer is getting. Some people have taken this time to turn the printer upside down and shake for 30 seconds. They have also tried a vacuum cleaner.

    Your statement...

I turn it on and there is a loud snap noise

Makes me believe that the encoder strip may have come loose. Try reading...

Cleaning the encoder strip (Loud bang from printer carriage) The second thread has the instructions on how to put the encoder strip back on.
