Can't get my HP LaserJet 6P to print. I installed the driver that came with Windows 7 which came with my Inspiron 580, but it won't print. I run the diagnostic tool and it just removes the job and says everything is OK. It's not. Dell support hasn't helped because it's a software problem. Microsoft won't help because Windows came with the Inspiron 580. I love my 6P and would prefer to not buy a new printer. Thanks.
I looked at the Finding System Information; it said it was for wireless, networking and internet; my printer is none of those (although it is supposed to be able to print wireless; I've just never used it wireless)
Now follow THESE INSTRUCTIONS, to install the HP LaserJet P6. Do NOT connect the printer until around Step 8 unless it prompts you to connect the printer. Usually the drivers need to be installed first, then connect the printer.
Also read Allow a printer past Norton This is for an older version of Norton but should get you close enough to allow the printer to communicate.
Go to HP LaserJet 6p/mp Printer series and download the software. Install the software, FIRST, it contains the drivers for the printer. At some point, it will ask you to connect the printer. Connect the printer at this time(powered on)
Hi, Rick. Here's what I did, along with what was different with my computer from your instructions
Uninstall the printer, start, control panel, programs and features, HP LaserJet 6P not in here, uninstall.
or
Start, all program, HP Printer not in here , Your Printer, uninstall.
Did go to devices and printers and deleted from there.
Printers and Faxes
Is called devices and printers
Hardware and sound doesn’t show on my computer, just sound so I went into
administrative tools
Then I clicked on the print management shortcut and opened the All Drivers folder and deleted the driver for my printer
Go to HP LaserJet 6p/mp Printer series and download the software. Install the software, FIRST, it contains the drivers for the printer. At some point, it will ask you to connect the printer. Connect the printer at this time(powered on)
It says at the site that it needs to be downloaded from Windows 7.
I couldn’t find the firewall in Norton, so disabled the Anti virus auto Protect
Then installed the printer following your instructions and it was like two printers were installed.I defaulted to the one that has (copy 1) and printed a word document. It worked! Thanks so much. What else can I do to thank you? Jane
Find the Block Windows File Sharing rule, and uncheck it.
Find the Default Inbound NetBIOS Name rule, and uncheck it.
Find the Default Inbound NetBIOS rule, and uncheck it.
Find the "Default Block Microsoft Windows 2000 SMB" rule, and uncheck it.
Click OK. If you close the window instead of clicking OK, your changes will not be saved.
Once you have disabled these four rules, you should be able to use File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks with Symantec Client Firewall enabled.
Hi, Rick. My printer is printing OK, but the first document I print after I turn it on for the day has a "cover" sheet that prints *s1M Do you know of any way to get that to stop? Thanks so much for all your help,. Jane
You can try running Delete Print Jobs, then restart your computer. If it's a stuck print job in the queue, then it will remove it. I don't see anything in the manual about a cover sheet and hope it's not malware related.
Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware update it and do a quick scan. Remove anything it finds. Also report back if it finds anything.

redsifaka,
Your Dell Inspiron 580, did it come with Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit) or was this upgraded to Windows 7?
Try running Finding System Information remove your product ID and post the rest of the information back here.
How is the HP LaserJet 6P connected to your computer?
What virus protection and firewall are you using?
