problem faxing

I am just now needing to use a fax and tried to properly configure it using the 'configuration wizard' which I hope has detected the correct modem and when I get to the line for TSID I put in my home phone number which is an ATT land line.  The fax will not send and I get an error message that there is no dial tone.....I checked the Fax menu on the actual 'all in one Dell Photo 924' machine and there are no options on the actual machine for any further configuration.  I am past the time for help from Dell without paying $75. per hour to help me....can anyone advise on how to get my machine to send AND receive faxes ?       thanks!

Uh, that's because the 924 does NOT have a modem with which you can send a fax. Your PC itself needs a modem.

And just to add to that, you also need a plain old analog telephone line connected to your computer's telephone modem. And you cannot be using Windows 7 Home or Vista Home. No faxing capability with those versions, so you need a third party software program for faxing. The solution for this is to use the newer fax over the Internet programs instead of the old telephone faxing system which is on its way out now. Research this to find out more.

Sorry-I have to correct something. Win 7 home does allow faxing, although I haven't tried it. I have seen lots of posts about users having difficulty in using the win 7 fax program, however.

Thanks so much for your advice on BVRP Phone tools...I am using a Windows XP system and did download that particular version......but I still cannot fax...when I tried using the program it requires a 'fax identifier' and the help section in Phone Tools  is little  help on what that means...or where I find it.....I tried putting my modem info in that box but it did not fit so I assume that is not what the program needs....

Thanks again for all you to do help.....you helped me four years ago and I know you must be some computer saint to still be working for thanks....I would send you chocolate but your Diabetes would not like that....I also saw on your profile that you live very near chocolate......so anyway....kudos to you and to your wife to allowing you to play computer guru to us neophytes!

Mary....I don't think my phone line is an analog line......not sure.....how do I find out......I tried downloading the BVRP phone tools software that Pudgy recommended and followed all the set up but when I try to fax I still get 'no dial  tone'......my phone company is ATT and I use a Gateway wireless router....

I only have one phone in my home.

    thanks !!!!!!!!!

    Texastea,

Analog phone line, one like in the old days that was wired to the house with a dial tone.

Do you have DSL? If so, you'll need a DSL Filter on the phone line from your computer to the wall.

    Paula,

First, your setup should look like...

    wall > ISP Modem/router > wireless router(if any) > wired/wireless

Since you have DSL, all devices, phones, answering machines, faxes, etc..., need a DSL Filter. Everything except the DSL modem. You may share a DSL filter.

wall > DSL Filter > splitter > multiple devices

You nned to have a phone line from your computer to a DSL Filter and then to the wall.

I don't understand what you mean by this:

    wall > ISP Modem/router > wireless router(if any) > wired/wireless

Here is what I see:  phone line then a router(wireless) then wire to computer  that is all is see.....

what should I look for?  specifically.....

    thanks...Paula

    Paula,

That is the correct setup for internet.

You have to run a separate wire from the phone jack on the computer, to a DSL filter to the wall, in order to fax. Unless you want to use a third party software to fax using the Internet.

With the modern technology of today, most people now email the documents.
