i have an 8100 with an upgrade to xp.. i was able to burn cd's with no problem . all of a sudden my computer no longer recognizes the "D" and "E" drives and i only get power to the "D" drive. dvd is on "D" and cds/rw is on "E". i have 40 G hard drive but am very low on drive space. could low drive space cause the two other drives not to open and / or be recognized by the computer? would adding an external hard drive solve the problem ? i also replaced the ide cable after this problem happened.
Maxtor is your Hard Drive. If there is no DVD/CD-ROM drives in the Device Manager and no error code, then check the Set-up (BIOS) and make sure it is enabled there.
When you upgraded to Windows XP, was it a clean install? If so, did you install the Chipset?
I have a very similar issue, in that my DVD drives are no longer recognized. I have 2 drives that have been working fine for about 6 months. Then just a few days ago, both no longer appearing. I checked the device manager and found that both devices listed, but had the following message.
Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)
I have had no luck from the Microsoft web site and have done the following.
Uninstalled and then reinstalled the hardware...this resulted in hardware device manager giving same error message above.
Reseated the cable between the mother board and the drives and the power... same error.
Replaced the cable between mother board and the drivers...same error.
Attempted to cable just one DVD driver at a time...same error.
Checked BIOS and found no issue (drives enabled).
It is very troubling as both were working and then they were not. I did a system scan and even went as far as uninstalling my version of Norton as NIS and NAV always seem to pull cr*p like this on me.... still not resolved. I am beginning to think this is an issue with the board, but there is no damage to it and no signs of any power surge or brown out in the area.
THis is an 8300 which was loaded with XP and yes I did upgrade to SP2, but that was several months ago as well.
