Hard Disk Drive 0 not found

For the past two days, I have been having this problem.  I will boot my computer up and it will log into windows just fine.  However, after a few minutes the computer will either freeze or go to a black screen with this message:  "Hard disk drive 0 not found.  No bootable devices.  Strike f1 to retry boot or f2 to enter setup."  I am at a loss as to what to do.  Should I replace the HD, reseat the HD, take out my dvd drive, etc?  Thanks in advance for your time and help.  By the way this is on the Inspiron 4100 series.

    I would suggest that you call up the Tech line and have them walk you through reseating the hard drive and pray that it works. Although reseating isn't by any means compicated, if you are under warranty you need to have a Tech tell you to so your warranty isn't null and void. After that is on record, reseat away to your heart's content.

    Well it isn't under warranty, so I guess I'm just gonna have to go solo.  I've had this computer going on 3 yrs now and its never really had a problem until this.  Guess I'll open her up and see what I can find.

    Hi Michael,

     

    I have been having the same problem as you since last night and don't know what to do - however now my computer doesn't even get to the logon screen anymore!! It just keeps trying to boot and fails and trys again in a never ending loop! - I was wondering if you managed to solve this problem and if so, what you did, as I am stuck for ideas!!!

    I am almost certain, since the problem would occur after running the machine a while, that it is heat-related.  Does the area where the HD is installed get much warmer than the rest of the laptop?  I am guessing it does... 

    Check to see that your cooling fan(s) are coming on after the laptop runs for a while, and back up your data while you can.  Just wasted my third HD in an Inspiron 600m, all due to heat-induced failures.  All of the HD's went the exact same way you are describing your issue...
