Help adding new hard drive--please!

My Dimension 8300 has been giving me fits lately and Dell Tech Support has not helped with the issue at all, so I decided to remove the original hard drive and start fresh with a new one. Dell could never give me the correct information on how to format a hard drive that has WinXP installed on it and then upgraded to Service Pack2 from a download. It has been a very frustrating three days dealing with this.
So, to get to the point, I have removed the old drive and installed a Maxtor 200GB as the Master Drive. Jumpers are correctly places for Cable Select. When I power up, I am given the choice to hit the F2 key to go into setup. I have no idea what I should do then as the Maxtor guide says "Upon entering Setup, highlight the Auto-Detect IDE HDD/Hard Drives option (if displayed) and press Enter. Naturally I can't find this. It goes on to say "If there is no Auto-Detect option available, chose Standard CMOS." Well, I can't find this either. I'm ready to throw the whole thing out the window!!
In Setup, if I choose Drive Configuration, then Primary Master Drive it indicates Hard Drive, the Drive Type says Auto and Capacity is 203 GB. So it seems to recognize something.
When I escape from Setup and chose Save., I get the message "Strike F1 to retry boot or F2 for Setup Utility.
I know there is someone out there who can help me -- please!?

Too bad you didn't try this forum before buying a new drive, and a Maxtor to boot.

You've gotten everything right so far.  Press F2, make the CD drive the first in the boot order, and then boot to the hard drive.

Well, I finally got the drive to start formatting, so that's one hurdle overcome. The problem was that I was putting the WinXP CD in the CD drive rather than the DVD. Sorry if I didn't buy the best HD but money is tight and this was an unexpected expense.

Well, what do you think of the Hitachi Deskstar 120 GB that came installed with my Dimension 8300 just two years ago? It's failed already. I realize Maxtor may not be the best but there's a bit of luck involved too. I have a HP laser printer that's running like a top at 11 years. Actually, I wish it would bite the dust so I could get a better one. :smileyvery-happy:

Maxtor's have been failing a lot lately that's all.

The Deathstar...?  Yup, that's what they called them.  However, they all go in phases, Hitachis are fine now.

My HP 4L ran great for that long, then up and died.  Using another one I got on eBay for $25.
