Split Before Sync

there was a disk failure.

when I tried to establish I am getting this error

'Incremental Establish' operation execution is in progress for device group 'abcd'. Please wait...

Cannot proceed when the BCV state is 'Split Before Sync' except if the force flag or exact pairing is used

20090727-23:00:03 Symmir establish failed, rc=22
20090727-23:00:03 Error during BCV establish operation, terminating...

I have tired with force flag, also -full flag

bcv is meta device. out of one meta member is showing invalid state. rest all the members are in sync

AFAIK you have to use both -force and -full while establishing a SpltBfrSync BCV.

Can you try using both options, please?

    first execute this step

symmir -sid xxx -g dg_name instant split -force

    then execute

symmir -sid xxx -g dg_name query //checked all the device pairs should be in split state

    again execute

symmir -sid xxx -g dg_name est

    symmir -g disk_grp est -incr -v

    20090727-23:00:01 Start establish for disk/volume group disk_grp

20090727-23:00:01 Symm device group(s) associated to this diskgroup: disk_grp

    Stefano,

    Thanks it worked...... :)

Can you please explain me why we need to an instant key word for splitting and also force during a an est.

why my command did nt work out, because I used to run the same command for establishing bcv....

    what is meant by splbfrsync?

Hulk unfortunatly the SpltBfrSync is a very odd situation. You have a BCV that's synching from its STD device. But suddenly the copy process is interrupted. The BCV device content is at most useless. You can't flag them as Split since a Splitted BCV is available to the hosts. And it needs some extra flags just to be sure you understood it was a very special (and odd) situation :-)

And you need an explicit -instant keyword since the default behaviour assumes your STD devices are quiet (and you can split without hurry). If your STD devices aren't idle and you can't wait (the content is changing while you are splitting) you need an extra option. Not a big deal, just a few characters in your shell scripts I guess ;-)

we used to always get that when we were syncing to unprotected BCVs and physical drive that BCV symdev was on would happen to fail.
