Anti virus and Spyware

I am new to computers SO Please please someone help. I have a dell Dimensions 5150 with Windows XP media edition 2005. It came with Nortons internet security 2005 90 day trial. I have not changed any settings.

I have asked Macfee if they do a full 1 Year subscribtion which will run on my system they replied THEY DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING THAT WILL RUN ON media centre operating system. But dell recommend Macfee - either one party doesn't know what the other knows.

I can not seem to get any reply from Nortons.

My question is what I need to have on my system so that I don't get virus or spyware on my system? Please help

I have successfully used Norton products for years on many systems.  That's what I would continue with.  The November PC World magazine reported Webroot Spy Sweeper to be the most effective spyware preventer.  I generally run Norton AV and ZoneAlarm or Norton firewalls, and I use a router which also acts as a hardware firewall.

Thanks for your help and advice, I think I will go for Nortons Internet Security 2006.

    What is a router?

A router is typically used for distributing a cable or DSL modem signal to more than one computer so multiple users can use a cable or DSL connection. It also provides a firewall as a side benefit. It is not used for a single dial-up connection.
