Make sure that you keep it all up to date...I recommended a check once a week, and then perform manual scans.

 

File Sharing networks are leaving you exposed to a high risk for viruses and spyware, so it is a must that you stay on top of this stuff.

 

Another smart thing to do on occasion is to run an ONLINE virus scan...they are free!  They won't actually protect you from viruses, but they are great at finding stuff that existing programs on your PC might miss...a must if you even suspect a virus got through and infected your PC.  The two best ones are Trend Micro Housecall and Panda's online virus scan product.

In addition to the afore mentioned tools, download HijackThis from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html and to check your startup and running processess download processexplorer and autoruns from www.sysinternals.com. Also, to obtain a second virus scan opinion, go to Trendmicro.com and use their Sysclean Damage Package.
