Adding a user.

Not sure if this is the correct forum but I'll give it a try. I'm the sole user of my Dimension 4500S. Recently I tried to add my wife as a user to my system. The result was my computer came to a virtual stand still. I had to go into system restore to delete my wife, so to speak, to get it working properly. My OS is Windows XP Home Edition. My question is, do I need a more powerful computer, a separate computer for the two of us or what?

    George073,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

You should not need a more powerful computer to create another user. Make sure XP Service Pack 3 is installed and then follow the steps below.

How to create another user in Win XP

It depends on your system ... how much memory you have, processor, etc. and whether you are using "Fast User Switching" (using Switch User instead of Log Off before your wife signs on).  If your system only has say 256MB of RAM (or less), your computer may not be able to keep up.  This computer only shows supporting up to 1GB of RAM, which is NOT very much ... IF it is fully loaded.

What Service Pack (which can also play a role) are you at?  And how much RAM is in your PC?

Thanks! You guys are a great resource. Helpful and respectful.  I almost have my problem solved.  I've successfully added my wife as another user on my computer.  Got her email setup.  Now I'm trying to set up Internet Explorer for her.  Internet Explorer wants to set up ver. 7.  How do I check to see what version of Internet Explorer I already have?  I'd like to keep the same version for both users.

One version of Internet Explorer cannot co-exist with another version and is installed per computer not per user, so if she has IE7 then so do you.  The latest is IE8.
