My computer goes through typical boot - Dell splash screen then Windows splash. Boots up my desktop background and then stalls out. I'm not sure if it is still chugging away or not, but desktop icons never appear, neither does the start menu bar. Tried to reinstall Windows XP (and not sure if it went through the whole install), but still does the same thing.

I don't want to do a system restore because I have personal photos and whatnot on there that I want to retrieve.
