Dell should pre-install Mozilla Firefox!

Hi!

I belive that Dell should pre-install the lastest copy of Mozilla Firefox, a secure, open-source browser that will eventually replace Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

If you think that Dell should (or not) pre-install Mozilla Firefox (browser), Mozilla Thunderbird (e-mail, also open-source), or the Mozilla Suite (the whole shabang, open-source) then post your opinion to our Community at www.coldhearted.net/community/.

** This is not an advertisment for my site, it's asking to post their opinion to our community so that it will not be deleted here.*

I'm not saying that Dell has to give up IE altogether, but possible educate their customers on Firefox and it's security.

In regards about functionality, yes IE has Firefox beat about that, but Firefox has grown and will continue to grow with added functionallity... have you seen Firefox 1.0 PR? It is good with more funtionallity. I am working on getting IE funtionallity 'converted' into Firefox, as a little gift to the Mozilla community.

"I belive that Dell should pre-install the lastest copy of Mozilla Firefox, a secure, open-source browser that will eventually replace Microsoft's Internet Explorer."

I wouldn't hold my breath.  While Internet Explorer has, for the first time since it's introduction, post a drop of 1% in usage, it still holds 94.73% of all users, down from an average of 95.5% as of July 6th, 2004.  I suspect Dell will be content to satisfy this ratio of users for a long time to come without the added grief of adding another browser to the mix.

Speaking from personal experience, I've tried most including, Firefox (and it's predecessors), Moz, Netscape and even a little Opera.  While they all have their good points and active supportors I still prefer IE if for no other reason, it's functionality...for instance, being able to utilize all the features of this forum.

For that to happen, Dell would also have to advise their customers to run Linux instead of Windows XP.  Better yet, Dell would be further ahead telling it's customers to just leave their computers off.  It's more secure.

I love Firefox and use it for everything (except the Dell forums) but it definitly has a long way to go.

I'm using Firefox on these forums tonight and not having any problems... are there any worthwhile features of the forums that I'm missing? Seems to be working fine.

As much as I love using Firefox, I can't really recommend Thunderbird to anyone. I tried importing my mail from Outlook and Tbird seemed to handle it OK, then after the first time I closed and reopened the program, a bunch of mail folders were lost. Uninstalled Tbird and the profile, reinstalled, repeated, same issues with disappearing or unopenable folders. Nasty waste of an evening.

To ColdHEartedGroup I have absolutely no idea where you get your facts, i.e firefox will replace IE.  The only way that will happen is if Microsoft decides to or is forced to unbundle IE from the Operating System.  I don't think that will happen in my lifetime.  Remember Microsoft and the Justice department fought that out in the courts and Microsoft won.  My prediction is as follows firefox will wither and die, unless someone figures out howe to cover the cost of maintaining it.  Linix lives today because IBM, HP, Novell, Redhat and others are making money with Linux

I know it's petty but I can't get the 'Board Options' menu to work for the life of me.  I like to use that menu to mark all messages as read so I know what's new when I come back the next time.

It is good that Firefox has the minority of use compared to IE.

Virus Writers and hackers would most likely attack IE than Firefox.

BUT, there are attacks on Firefox, yes, but not as much as IE.

I love Firefox, too, because it loads a lot faster than IE on dial-up.

    And it is so customizable.

    Drawbacks:
    No Windows updates.
No WYSIWYG editor in Dell Forum.
Now, no edit function in Dell forum.

And a lot of websites are more IE friendly.
    ************************************************

I use Firefox most of the time. I use it here.

But I use IE when I have to.

Okay, Firefox has had over 3,400 downloads in 4 days and 1 million is 10 days*? If you think Firefox is going to wither up and die, tell people at my forum. That's why I have this poll/pitition  to see who likes it, doesn't like it, and why...

Firefox can be valnerible if Firefox wants to be, virus-scanner... a constaint, instananious check of every incoming packet...

    That's all for now...
