I have just got a new Dimension 9100, but cannot perform a clean install of Windows XP Professional as just after the MS-DOS Windows is starting up prompt (just after all the drivers load) I receive a blue screen error message: STOP: 0x0000007E .....
Now I believe that there is something not configured correctly in the BIOS (latest rev. A01 initial rel.), or something Dell has put there to prevent me installing the OS I paid for. Now, having stated that, Dell's own XP Home installation CD runs past this point and does not crash. I have 2X Windows XP Pro CDs that work fine when installing on my other systems, so there is nothing wrong with the actual discs I am using.
Why is it I get this BSOD with XP Pro and not with Dell's XP Home installation CD?
Is it unreasonable for me to want to put XP Pro OS on instead of Home Edition?
After a comprehensive search on the web has yeilded nothing positive, I have come over here hoping that somebody else has a DIM 9100 and also is trying to install a clean XP Pro. I have used fdisk and format tools but to no avail.
I have done a clean istall many-a-time before, so I believe there is something limiting/or preventing me to setup Windows without Dell's OEM CD.
Does this mean Dell expects me to purchase their own OEM version of XP Pro to be able to run this OS on a 9100 system?
I appeciate the KB article - already seen this; problem is the resolution doesn't seem to apply to me...

Method 1: I have 160GB HDD free 2: Have newest (only) BIOS rev. A01 for 9100 3: NA since formatted 4: " " " " " 5: " " " " "
The HDD is a SATA drive, meaning that do I need to hit F6 during the start of the setup to install any Intel Storage driver (for SATA operation)?
Also I read on here that somebody with same deal apparantly slipstreamed his XP Pro CD with SP2, that is my next step I suppose.
I am still at the dilemma of why only this 9100 Dell crashes, and other vendors systems seem fine with XP Pro original clean install...
Thanks for the responces, its somewhat relieving that others have the same problem, meaning there is no faulty hardware (unless the BIOS or something is bugged)...
where the problem seemed to be trying to install Windows XP SP1 on a computer with a PCI Express graphics card. The solution seemed to be to use either a XP SP2 CD or a slipstreamed version with SP2 slipstreamed in.

Only the Dell wireless desktop is connected via USB, the digital FP monitor, and speakers via SB Audigy 2 ZS, also the dialup modem is connected. Maybe I should try a wired mouse/keyboard but I don't have a USB keyboard and the mobo has no PS/2 input.

There is no problem installing a non-Dell version of Windows on any Dell computer. In other words Dell has not done anything that would prevent you from doing this. Do you have any external devices connected to the computer? If so, remove those devices (especially any USB devices except the mouse and keyboard) before trying to install Windows. Also see the following Microsoft article:
Cheers for the responces they were most helpful. That "PCI.SYS" error is exactly my error, and no I hadn't seen that page so yes it was very helpful. I tried disabling PCI-Express graphics with a PCI-Express card (6800) but same error resulted.
I am now in going to try XP Pro SP2 slipstream for the PCI-Express grahics support, hopefully this will allow me to continue. I will report back with results for anybody else with the same scenario.
Sorry for late reply been very busy as I got it working.
Installed XP Pro x64 Edition and it had PCI-Express drivers native as does Win XP Pro SP2 (slipstreamed). SATA (F6) driver at setup is also required for SATA drive installs.
