Microsoft support, life cycles etc.

After reading all the text/papers/instructions on the subject I'm still somewhat confused. The current OS on my desktop is xp home edition which had an initial date of 12/31/2001 and given the life cycle chart it has a life span of (5) years which would have mainstream support end sometime towards the end of this year. Yet while looking at another chart/matrix the note section makes something like the following statement: mainstream support will end approx. (2) years after the release of the next version of the product. Since Vista is not due to drop until sometime in 2007 does that mean that security updates will extend to sometime in 2009? Thanks for your help.
