Norton Internet Security 2005 Reactivation problem

I uninstalled my NIS 2005 that comes with new Dell XPS laptop(I presumed the CD is an OEM copy) and reinstalled it. I read from knowledge base that reinstalling NIS will not need reactivation(not sure if it also applies to OEM copy). Anyway after reinstalling it actually ask for my product key and I provided the product key that was generated when I first installed my OEM copy and it complained invalid key. I spent 3 days already dealing with Norton technical and customer support and I tried everything they suggest to uninstall, clearing the registry etc etc but nothing work. Anyone can help?

The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2006/2005/2004/2003 products from your computer.

I tried all the Symantec tools and fixes. I gave up calling their tech support and install Free version of AVG instead. I somehow think the problem is related to this OEM installation is for new PC and the product  key was actually generated after the first succesful installation. I suspect when I try to register again it is sending the product key plus some hardware information to the activation server and the activation server rejects it. I tried to communicate this to the Tech support but they are like robots that can only work thru the same procedure ie check the product key if valid and then suggest ways to uninstall and reinstall. I don't think that was the problem but the way they handle tech support is .............
