Operating System Password??

I recently attempted to plug in a cable internet line into my desktop (under 12 months old).  After pointing and clicking on some network and internet options (Yes, I am a novice that should not have been doing this), I have found that on startup the operating system is asking me for a password that I have never created. 
There are no option to remove the password on the password page and the system will not allow me to do a system restore.
Thoughts??

    Yes it is possible to remove the password.
     
    Step 1: Boot computer into Safe Mode
     
    - Turn off computer. As soon as you turn it on, repeadilty tap the F8 key about 6-7 times. This will bring up an "Advanced Option Menu" screen
    - Choose "Safe Mode with Networking" and press enter on the Windows XP HOme option
    - about 30 seconds later, you will see a list of accounts. Choose "Administrator". Click Yes on the first prompt.
     
    Step 2: Remove Password
     
    - Click Start -> Control Panel -> User Accounts
    - Click the User you wish to remove the password from.
    - Click "Remove Password".
     
    Step 3: Get out of Safe Mode.
     
    - Start -> turn off computer -> Restart
     
    DONE!!

    I have only one opion; so I chose the Windows Media Centre.  It then brought up the Log on to Windows window.??  So, I was never offered a list of accounts.

    Sure that is fine.. after you've selected Safe Mode wtih networking. Choose whatever option you see next...ie Windows XP Media Center... then you should see a bunch of lines of multidisk.. then a listing of accounts inwhich one of them will be administrator

    Again, no list of accounts.  After the multidisc page I get a black background and a window for Log on to Windows.

    Have you tried the default blank password? Just leave the password box empty & press Enter and see it that works.

    mwelsh33,

    At the Log on page enter Administrator as the user name and leave the password blank. If you are able to log on you can go to Start|Control Panel|User Accounts and change or eliminate the password on your named administrator account. If a blank password does not allow you to log in you can blank the password using the procedures given here.

    There is no evidence in user accounts of a password ever being created.  The problem must lie in something that I did when pointing and clicking in different networking windows.  Are there any such windows that would trigger the need for a password??

    Your attempts are appreciated.

    I can get onto my computer and use it but I would rather not have this window show up daily with no answer for it.

     

    Frustrations mounting.
