System Lockup Trouble- Can't reinstall windows xp sp2
I have been having trouble with system lockups. whenever I run Money 2000, Virus scan or spyware my system freezes. Need to hold power button for about 5 seconds to shut down. I have tried system restore, last known good, disk defragmenter and neither worked.
I have tried to reinstall windows, after I have selected to setup windows xp home edition a blue screen comes up and says cannot read cd rom drive. I put the disk in my dvd rom drive, restarted and keep getting the same message, cannot read cd rom drive.
Now whenever I reboot a black screen comes up telling me to choose between xp setup or to run xp home edition. after choosing to run xp home computer starst up fine but I still get lockups.
Tried installing xp pro sp1 but get the same cd rom error message as before.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Dimension 8400 and I tried setting the boot order to boot from the disk but I'm getting the same message, Cannot read CD ROM drive. what do you think could be causing this?tooxtreme3d

It happens with both of my drives. I can play cd's and dvd's. Just for some reason when trying to boot from either drive it wont read the drives.

What system do you have? Are you setting the system to boot from the CD (must be the master device if you have two)?
I believe you should try to stick with the OS that came with your system.
