System Slowdown

Been expiriencing an odd issue with my XPS 400.  I typicaly leave it on and running all the time and just put it on standby when I'm not using it for a while.

After about a week of this, I notice that when switching between applications or opening up new programs there is a large amount of lag and the screen begins to refresh very slowly for about 10 seconds.  Once I have switched apps, everything runs smoothly again.

Using EndItAll, I have checked and made sure that nothing that is not supposed to be running is running in the background, and rebooting the machine solves the problem for another week.

I'm just curious if anyone knows what could be causing it.

Thanks!

What is your system details? Memory?

Check Task Manager's Perfromance Tab after a reboot and record the memory usages. Repeat after slowing down occurs and report back. Also note CPU usages under the Process Tab. You may find something using excessive CPU time after being on for an extended time.

No strange processes popping up and whenever I look at the CPU usage it's usualy less then 3%...every once in a while spiking higher, but the spikes do not coincide with the slowdown.

I've noticed this only seems to happen after I play certain games...perhaps something with the video card?

It's interesting that your computer slows down particularily after it goes on standby.

I almost wonder if it's gettng slow because there's something else that is runing constantly that has a memory leak?

I found this in a search - perhaps this will assist in narrowing in on why your computer has become so slow.

I have heard of this before and wonder if you would have the same problem if you tried not allowing your system to go into standby? At least then you would know if it is related to standby or not...

My PC will operate for up to 3-days createing DVD-movies..but never really has a change in performance until about 3-months of this type of work..usually "corrupt" fits the scheme of things..and a OS Re-install has everything up to 100%..

Lately I have been turning OFF/McAFEE-Messenger-Creative-ROXIO in the Lower-Task Bar..and only accessing from Programs what i need(ROXIO Audio Central-CREATIVE-settings)...what-ever..I have also Shut-Down the Microsoft UPDATE and McAFEE Update when useing a UPLOAD-website.....seems...better....

Just having obvious SLOW-PC Problems..is when I remove some software programs/ADOBE/DELL/DELL Printer/even ROXIO/or everything minus the OS and UPDATES....and Re-Install the software I need to use.....after that Project is complete I will re-install the others back into the PC...if that still shows some "corrupt" operation I re-install the OS CLEAN....

I like to keep (C:/)Drive low on FILES..so I use a ARCHIVE(external)Drive....and that offers longer periods for DVD-authoring(w/o)a Re-Install of the OS....

I constantly DEFRAGMENT my HDD's(3)....2-External/1-System....and then attempt to archive to a DVD-disk....

Also...when useing an EXTERNAL device....don't assign a DRIVE Letter.....let WINDOWS assign your DRIVE Letters(better Operation)....but removal might be confusing if you do not write down the assignment..

Digtial Movie creation needs a Processor Speed of 1.8GHz at the least....and Video games are said to need 2-4 GB's of RAM....

    other than that......????/.
