This morning when I turned on my computer I noticed I had no System Tray where it should appear on the right side of the task bar. The digital clock was the only thing showing. There are no icons where there are usually about 6 or 7, and the expansion arrows are also missing. I wanted to be sure I had no virus and it checked out clean with both Norton and McAfee. The computer seems to function properly, at least for now, as I can surf and check mail without a problem. I've done all the local maintenance and rebooted several times but the System Tray is gone!
I have no idea where to check now to bring it back and hope it is not a registry problem. Wonder if there is a possible cure other than to reinstall XP. Any help is appreciated. Many thanks.
I used the word startup icons inappropiately and I apolize. Not meaning the items on the Start Menu, but the icons usually placed on the lower right in the Systems Tray when installing software.
I do appreciate you taking time to send your suggestions.
One last comment. I noticed there are many posts on the forum regarding missing icons from the System Tray but that is not my primary problem. Returning the System Tray to normal operation is most important. Hopefully, what ever is wrong now will not cause future problems. Once the Tray is operable I will be able to get the startup icons again. Actually, I am glad one or two of the nuisance icons are gone anyway.
Appreciate your pictorial. After I right click on Start\Properties as you mentioned then click on the Taskbar Menu I see eveything below the "Show The Clock" box is grayed out including access to the Customize button. So I am unable to bring up the next screen "Customize Notifications" in order to make further adjustments. Apparently, this is more involved than I thought.
Although my computer is otherwise operable, I can manage and I'm sure the problem will eventually be solved. Thanks for taking your time to help.
To make the customize button active, check 'hide inactive buttons'. Then make the changes to the buttons, OK, then uncheck hide inactive buttons before OK out.
Download TweakUI.exe from
here (make sure you don't get the version for Itanium systems). When you have installed it, open it and under "Taskbar and Start Menu" check "Show taskbar notification icons." That should restore the icons and make the "Customize" button accessible again.

Click on the "taskbar" tab.
Click on the "Customize" button.
Click on each entry you want to show, and on the drop-down list, choose "Always show". OK.
