VISTA SLOWING COMPUTER

Hello

Over the past month I have noticed my Vista Home premium 32 bit Dell Dimension DM061 slowing up.

Its not just after turning it on. I will click for it to open an application and then it can spend 5 mins thinking about it. The hour glass icon rotates but nothing else happens. I press Ctrl alt del to bring up task manager to check processes but that only opens after it has done whatever it was doing. I have read and done several things that Dell directed me to via support.microsoft.com but still it slows. The only things I can think off that I have done recently is install Office 2007 and put in a USB pen and use ready boost.

Any ideas???

Thanks  Chez

The readyboost usb system is used at startup via super fetch to increase performance but it lacks in buffer capability when compared to ddr2 internal RAM, the ready boost function is advertised as a cheap alternative to increasing system speed but the buffer speed varies, with office on the system and the readyboost the slow down is probably the cpu usage caused by mearly having office on the system and the read speed of your ram and the fact that readyboost will only improve some programs and has been shown to slow down performance in some cases, type msconfig in run and disable startup items, in services tick hide all microsoft services, disable everthing else. Download ccleaner and remove temp files on the system, depending on the RAM in your system consider upgrading, with office a minimum of  2 Gigs is required but 4 would be a more eficent amount even if vista will only use 3.4.

I would be leary of using MSCONFIG to disable all start-up items and disabling all non-MS related programs in services (unless you are sure of what each service or program does).  This may cause programs on your system to not work properly, and it will turn-off any type of anti-virus and spy-ware programs you have on the PC. I don't think that office would slow down your pc that much because it is not running unless you are using the applications. What are the specifications of your PC (Memory/RAM, Processors, ETC)? You can press the Window key and the Pause/Break key and it will bring the information up.

With your PC's specs it should not be running that slow.  You could donwload and run CCleaner.  It will clean some of the junk on your system.  Don't use the registry cleaner part of CCleaner.  Here is a good article with some steps to perform.   See if any of this helps.  If this doesn't help the slowdown could be related to BullGuard.  I'm not too familiar with the product, but from my experience AV/AS programs do not play nicely with Vista.  You could use some other protection programs and see if you still have the same problem.  If you choose this step there is a list of free security software in the Virsu/Spyware forums.

    Thanks for all the info.

Just a bit more gen from me. My comp locked out yesterday, couldnt log on to net, couldnt close down programs, how do go via task manager to close things down. Rebooted then waited for nearly an hour while the hourglass did 360's nothing would open, task manager would not open. Eventually rebooted again and it ran up quick and everything worked ok.
