I am interested in purchasing the Inspiron E1505. My quandary is what operating system to choose. Since this will be used at college I am inclined to get Windows XP Pro because I believe I may need to connect to a domain. However, The E1505 comes with XP Media Center as the default op system. If I choose XP Pro, what features will not work on the E1505? For example, will the control that lets you play media files without booting Windows work with XP Pro? Just to add to my confusion, Dell recommends XP Pro but loads XP Media Center on the E1505.
You should go to the college web site and see what they require. My daughter started at UCB and they are not part of a domain, so XP home is fine. I'm not sure media center is essential, but it is probably convenient if you want TV tuners. I have a TV tuner in my XP Home machine and it works fine.
Thanks Peter. The issue I have is my son is going to a 2 yr college that is currently not wireless. They are going that way so I want to be prepared.
My other question, if you or anyone knows is... what do I lose if I load it with XP Pro? Am I being foolish purchasing the E1505 if I don't get Media Center?
Seriously- are you saying I can connect to any domain with XP Media Center? Is this only Linksys domains? The issue with XP Media Center is connecting to domains, which is why I am hesitant.
