Windows crashes when mouse is unplugged
Hello.
I'm using Inspirion 700m, and it runs on Windows XP professional.
I got a problem since about 4 months ago.
When I unplug my USB mouse from my laptop, the screen becomes like compressed at the top.
Then I don't have control, and I need to hold the power button to terminate the system.
I cannot boot the computer without mouse.
I suspect the cause of this was Windows update, which started autmatically 4 months ago.
That was the first time I saw the compressed screen.
I tried Dell Diagnostics today.
I'll copy the message I've got.

Msg:Block 286: Illegal request - possible use of incorrect media.
This message appeared when the diagnosis was testing the DVD drive, so I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the USB, mouse, and the screen.
Can anyone help me?

Hi Ron.
Thank you for the post.
I'm just unplugging my mouse.
I checked my "Safely Remove Hardware," but all I can find there is some removable storages, and I don't see my USB mouse there.128

Couple of things to try:
Uninstall and reinstall the mouse driver. If it's using the generic XP mouse driver, skip this.
Disconnect all USB devices except mouse and keyboard and (re)boot the PC. Open Device Manager and expand list under USB. Right-click each USB item and select Uninstall. When all USB entries are removed, exit Device Manager and reboot. XP should reinstall the USB ports.
If that doesn't solve the problem, run a system file check:
click start>run
type in: sfc /scannow
(space between sfc and /)
click ok
Insert XP CD if sfc requests it. Reboot when it's done.

Are you just yanking the plug on the USB mouse or do you have to use the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in system tray.
