XP 'Welcome to Setup' issues with keyboard

Ok, the story here is that after a certain blue screen of death, I got the even more dreaded C/Windows/System32/config error. Now I coudnt actually repair it because I had never gotten around to making a back up CD using the Dell Recovery Utility. Now I'm stuck trying to repair this error. However I did find a backup Windows setup CD and it was from another computer company, MDG. I am not sure whether this might have anything to do with the following errors I'm about to describe. The first error was that my USB keyboard stops working once the backup CD loads the welcome to setup screen where I get to choose whether to repair, continue with the setup or quit. At this point only the media keys on my keyboard light up but none of the lock keys (ie num lock, scroll lock, caps lock)actually work. Then I realized none of the keys worked, as I found out in a fit of rage when I kept pressing the r button for half an hour without the welcome to setup sceen going into the recovery console. So I decided to ask around if there was any sort of way around this, and people suggested to me to use a ps/2 keyboard. Now my dell dimension 9100 doesnt have a ps/2 port, so I had to buy a ps/2>USB converter. Once I got this, my ps/2 keyboard only worked with its num lock key at the Welcome to setup screen and in the POST event log it recorded a keyboard error. So...that is the conundrum. I was trying to order a dell back up cd. but I have no idea where to get it from. any help would be extremely appreciative.

Last question first. See if this post helps. And please do me a personal favor. Post back and let me know if Dell actually promises to send the discs. There's been an ongoing debate about this issue.

With the config error, it would help if you posted the entire error, spelled exactly as you see it.

SheriffLobo..... one suggestion.......  try plugging your USB - wireless keyboard into another USB port.  With the newer Dells only one port is active during boot up.  That port is usually located on the rear of the system.  Otherwise the USB ports are inactive until Windows loads the necessary drivers.
