XPS 15 9500, high idle temperature
Hi,
I have had my XPS 15 9500 for 3 days now. The first day I bought it and setup everything, I don't remember hearing much fan noise at all the and did not notice the keyboard getting hot. Since end of day 2 when I downloaded a 50GB game (before even opening it), I noticed the fan get very loud during the download. When playing, it got up to about 100 degrees. Since then the keyboard surface is always hot under minimal load with pretty much nothing happening. I have restarted and left to cool multiple times. Today, at idle, the CPU starts at about 40 degrees centigrade on waking up from sleep and climbs to around 55 degrees with no applications open. I open chrome - just 1 tab and not a singing and dancing media packed page - and it goes up to 65-70. I have checked task manager and CPU is <10% utilised with memory <35% utilised. Chrome and Killer Control Centre sit at the top of CPU utilisation - nothing suspicious there. No antivirus scans running. I have run Dell SupportAssist to optimise everything and have all the latest drivers installed and latest BIOS. Have shut down and rebooted various times.
So is this normal? It doesn't seem right to me and doesn't fit with my experience from the first day of using the laptop. My Power settings are currently on Dell scheme with Optimised thermal setting. I have not changed anything from default power settings apart from activating hibernate on power button press and switched on advanced charge. I keep the AC plugged in most of the time but have unplugged it a few times today and then the temperature drops by about 10 degrees. I have also unplugged all USB/HDMI connector when checking temperature. On my (very) old Vaio, the Core Duo CPU getting to 50-55 degrees was cause for alarm and it would do that when I had youtube and lots of other tabs open. So I am old school and don't know what to expect from i7 CPUs. Just a bit concerned there is something wrong.

Hi cosyless. Unfortunately they have said they will not look into this as I bought my Dell laptop from a retailer rather than on the dell website. Very unhelpful. I'm not asking for anyone to come and fix it, just basic help from the manufacturer. Never experienced this attitude before from any tech company.

Me too I had the same problem with my brand new XPS15 9500 i9 the keyboard too hot, I don't like it at all. I just bought from DELL.COM

Brought the laptop home: everything was perfect. Used it for a week, everything was perfect. Downloaded a 50GB game (Control) and fan speeds and temp (understandably went up while playing (but only up to about 65 degrees). Since then, average CPU temp is being maintained in the 60 degree range, and average fan speed is noticably louder. So something about playing the game flipped a switch.
The two things I see are that my CPU clock seems overclocked: 4500MHz (I didn't set any overclocking myself), and the GPU load while just browsing Edge or working on a Word document is in around 15-20% (not high, but seems a bit high for a Word doc!).
I've set power settings to max CPU at 80%, which downclocked things back to stock. But temps are still up in the 55-60 degree range, and the fan is in an always on state as a result.
So, again: something about playing the game flipped some switch that hasn't switched back. Would love if Dell support could weigh in with suggestions.
