Applies to: Alienware Area-51 (AA16250 / AA18250, 2025, Ultra 9 275HX, Intel Barlow Ridge TB5 controller) Likely applies to other Barlow Ridge (USB4/TB5) machines as well

Symptoms

External monitor connected via Thunderbolt 5 (TB5) cable works fine during normal use

After complete power loss (unplugging AC / switching off the power strip), next cold boot → monitor gets no signal

Swapping to a Thunderbolt 4 cable → everything works

Normal shutdown (AC still connected) → TB5 also works fine on next boot

When it fails, hot-plugging either end of the TB5 cable or a reboot (not shutdown) brings the display back

Troubleshooting timeline

Enabled BIOS → Thunderbolt Boot Support: fixed the normal-shutdown case, but full power loss still failed

Updated BIOS to 2.5.0 (2026-07-08, includes latest TB controller NVM firmware 64.64): did not fix it

Verified Windows USB4 host router driver is current (10.0.26100.8972)

Final fix: under BIOS → Virtualization Support → DMA Protection, there are two switches:
- Enable Pre-Boot DMA Support
- Enable OS Kernel DMA Support
Turning BOTH off completely fixed the issue. Full power loss → cold boot → TB5 display comes up every time.

Root cause analysis

DMA Protection is a VT-d / IOMMU-based security feature (Microsoft's "Kernel DMA Protection") that isolates Thunderbolt/PCIe device memory access against DMA attacks. When enabled, the TB controller must complete IOMMU isolation-domain setup and DMA remapping table creation before link training at cold boot.

TB5's 80Gbps link training is far more complex than TB4's 40Gbps. With the IOMMU pre-step in the path, 80G link training exceeds the monitor's signal-detection window → handshake fails → monitor declares "no signal" and sleeps. TB4's simpler 40G training still finishes in time even with the extra IOMMU step, which is why the TB4 cable always worked.

This also explains why normal shutdown was fine but full power loss wasn't: on normal shutdown, standby power (5VSB) keeps the TB controller state alive, so the next boot takes the warm path. Full power loss forces a true cold boot through the IOMMU-slowed path.

The fix

Recommended belt-and-suspenders (keep these ON):

BIOS → Thunderbolt/USB4 Configuration → Thunderbolt Boot Support = Enabled

Thunderbolt Security Level = No Security

Security trade-off (read this)

Disabling DMA Protection means Thunderbolt/PCIe devices can theoretically access memory before the OS locks down (DMA attack window). Acceptable for personal/home use; for corporate/high-security environments, keep DMA Protection enabled and work around it by hot-plugging the TB5 cable after boot, or just use a TB4 cable.

Feedback for Dell/Intel

Please optimize TB5 link-training timing when Pre-Boot DMA is enabled, instead of forcing users to choose between a security feature and a working display.

Environment: Alienware Area-51 (AA18250) / BIOS 2.5.0 / Windows 11 26100 / Intel Barlow Ridge TB5 controller (8086:5781, NVM 64.64) / active TB5 cable + Thunderbolt display
