I think it has to do with AWCC. I do not own a R4 so I am sorry I cannot tell you much more. I just know it is possible. The side led is not turned off by default when side panel is removed. Cass is the experienced user for this model.
I always tell people to shut-down before you remove the side-panel-cover (then turn back on).
All the LEDs will work while the cover is removed (except for the LEDs on the side-panel you just removed).
