Erractic Mouse

I have a Dimension 4700 that was purchased in Jan 2005. I do not have a wireless. While working, the mouse will suddenly jump, either to the right or left out of sight, and I have to manually move it back. It is very random and I have not seen a pattern that I can track. I checked my mouse pad to be sure I have nothing on it. And it is the original Dell mousepad that came with my system. My biggest concern is that I have gotten a virus or something. Any help would be appreciated.

    What type mouse do you have?  If it has the rubber ball on the bottom, remove the ball and clean the rollers inside. If optical put the mouse on a solid color pad or piece of white paper and try it. Optical mice can act up on multi colored pads etc.

    I saw another post with a similar problem, and this is the same problem I am having with my optical mouse. The mouse and mouse pad both came with my XPS gen 3. I just changed my mouse pad to a fabric one, and that seems to have fixed the problem. But just in case that the problem was not fixed by the change of the mouse pad, what should I do?
