Keyboard sending wrong keycodes
I have had this intermittent problem with my keyboard where after starting up certain keys (mainly 'E') stop working. I have contacted Dell and have gotten a new keyboard from them with no better results. Even after I was able to show them that certain keys that were 'stuck' didn't even work in the BIOS screens, Dell insisted I had to reinstall my OS (xp). I really can't believe this since they cannot give me a reason why. Anyway I wrote an assembler program that reads the keycodes produced from the keyboard controller (port 0x60) and found that in the couple cases I checked, the 'e' key was sending a 0x64 which is the same as F5.
Has anyone had something similar and managed to get Dell to listen? I can accept a reinstall if they would listen and explain why it is not a problem with the controller.
Thanks for letting me rant
/S

elihrairah,
Thank you for visiting the Dell Community Forum.
If the issue is happening in the BIOS screens, it is not related to the operating system or any other software on the system so a reinstall of the operating system is pointless. If the keyboard has been replaced and you are having the same issue, there may be a hardware failure. You may want to try a different type of keyboard if possible to see if the same thing happens. Also for basic trouble-shooting you might want to strip the system down to the basic boot components and confirm that it still does the same thing.
If still having this problem, I would advise contacting Technical Support again with further information on the symptoms of your issue and make sure they understand that this is happening in the BIOS screens and is therefore not related to the operating system.
