Windows Protection Error

Sometimes when I load up my computer (sometimes after a crash) I get a message "Windows Protection Error. You must reboot your system". Rebooting does nothing, your have to go into Safe Mode and then restart, there is no other way of getting back into Windows. I've noticed sometimes when this happens it also restores a backed up version of the system registry so perhaps it may be something to do with the registry? Anyway, I've noticed that there is a bug fix for this problem on the XPS D models but I've got an XPS T model so I'm not sure is it'll work or not.

HELP!!!!

Hmmm...IE 5.5, maybe? There's a good post on that below.

From Scot Finnie's report on some of the effects of IE 5.5:

"2. Inexplicable crashes, sometimes related to the MSHTML.DLL file."

I have 5.5 installed...I note a slowdown in OE, strange little screen flashes when opening some java-enhanced pages/posts, and windows opening at odd sizes. I'll leave it in here for a bit and see if they come up with patches, but it definitely ISN'T as smooth as IE 5.01, with or without the service pack.

A Windows protection Error is either due to a corrupt registry key/setting or a basic I/O conflict. Check device manager for yellow exclamation marks and also whether DMA is enabled on your system. The latter has been prone to cause problems, it does slow down the HDD a tad but not enough to notice I understand.

Well thanx you 2, but the problem was occurring before I even had IE 5.5 so it wasn't that - in fact it hasn't happened sicne I've installed IE 5.5! DMA is enabled, I have no conflict whatsoever. The only thing I can think of is an invalid registry key but how do I check the registry?

Depending on the operating system you have installed, scanreg seems to be the utility to run. It is a utility that checks the registry for errors.

    Hope this helps
