I have just purchased a notebook and also have a dell desktop at home.  Is there a cable I can purchase to link the two usb ports to transfer data?

I don't belive USB can work like this.  USB is not a peer-to-peer inteface like 1394.

To communicate between the two PCs,  they must be connected via:  1394, TCP/IP, bluetooth, etc.

A regular type-A male to male usb cable should do. Once connected, windows xp should establish what used to be known as a direct cable connection.
