Gone through the FAQs but internet still isn't functioning

I have a 1184 Wireless Broadband Router and just recently I havn't been able to use the internet with it.  When I connect an ethernet cable directly to my laptop it works.  It connects fine to the router but I can't browse the internet or sign on to AIM or anything.  Any help would be most appreciated.  Ive gone through the FAQ and couldn't find an answer that worked (ive disabled the bridge and took off the firewall and everything).

    Jimmy,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

What happens if you try  to ping the router or your gateway (ISP)?  Try the following steps:

    • Update the drivers and firmware for the router and also for the wireless network card.
    • Try changing the channel on the wireless adapter.
    • Remove all sources of interference, like cordless telephones, microwaves, etc.
    • Disable WEP on your router.

Im not very computer savvy so I really do not how to easily do any of that.  I really doubt I have to update anything cause I still have the resource cd and all the files on there are the latest ones.

My roommate has no trouble getting online through the wireless router.  It's weird cause it was working fine for me one night then all of a sudden I can't browse websites or sign on to instant messenger.  It even says im connected to the wireless network but nothing is happening when I try to surf.  I never even changed any settings or anything.  Ive tried reinstalling all the drivers and the same thing happens.  No warnings come up or anything, just cant surf but it's still connected.

    Thanks

You just eliminated half the problme if another computer can connect so it is an issue with your card.  Uninsstall it and re-install it and just because you have the Resource CD does not mean you have the latest drivers.  Compare the settings on your card to that of your roommates.

Thanks so much for the help so far.  Im going to go ahead and download all the drivers but I don't necessarily know exactly which ones but i guess it wont hurt to install all of them.  I was looking through the Broadcom Advanced Control Suite and when I look at my Dell Truemobile 1300 WLAN Mini-PCI Card it says under driver status: Device not loaded.  And  for network satus it is a red light for Network Status OK.

But I will give an update when the drivers are done downloading.

Whoa.....you only need the 32 bit XP drivers.  Save them to a Folder you make called C:Drivers\Broadcom so they will be easy to find.  Why in the world would you download all of them????????

I updated my wireless card adapter (Dell TM 1300 WLAN Mini-PCI Card) and I still cannot get on the internet but I am getting a strong signal.  Everything says the driver is working just fine I never had a problem before.  It was always automatic.  The brodcam advanced control suite still says the status is: Driver not Loaded.

Try plugging an ethernet cable from your machine to the router to see if you can connect.  If so, you know it is definitely you card and/or it's settings.

Well, I went home this weekend to try the router at home.  I ran an ethernet connectrion from one of the lan ports to my family's computer and I still cannot connect to the internet.  At least I figured out that it's definitly the router.  I ran through the setup and everything and when it gets to the point of trying to connect to the internet it cant.

Ive reset all settings on it and upgraded the firmware...nothing.  I think the router is just shot. I did have Norton running on my computer and it would come up with the realtime virus protection pop ups saying that I had some Gaobot virus.  But when I disconnected the wireless router all together it wasn't coming up anymore.
