Correct Memory Configuration for R430

Hello,

I have a Dell R430 with dual processor.

It currently has 4x32GB PC4-2133 memory modules working (128GB).

From a decommissioned server, I have available 8x16GB PC4-2400 which I'd like to add to this server to total 256GB but I'm confused with where to put each module to make the configuration valid. I've read what seem like conflicting information about how many modules can be used for CPU1 and for CPU2.

Could someone kindly clarify where each module should go given the above configuration?

Do I need to put the 3x32GB in B1-B4 and the 8x16GB in A1-A8? This seems to be what this doc indicates? https://qrl.dell.com/Files/en-us/Html/Manuals/R430/System%20memory=GUID-D04A3623-2BA6-4C99-BBAD-298891A1BEBF=1=en-us=.html

I understand the memory speed will be lowered to 2133 as it is the lowest speed out of both.

Thanks in advance!

    Gavin2812,

Would you confirm the part number for the dimms, it may be a compatibility issue?

If you go to page 82 here you can find the guidelines for the dimm population, as well as table 40 on page 85.

Let me know if this helps.

    Hi, thanks for your reply.

This is what I meant about conflicting info.

The page you referenced (page 82) says this:

In a dual-processor configuration, the memory configuration for each processor should be identical. For example, if you populate socket A1 for processor 1, then populate socket B1 for processor 2, and so on. ● Memory modules of different capacities can be mixed provided other memory population rules are followed (for example, 4 GB and 8 GB memory modules can be mixed).

But the page I referenced (also Dell) says this:

Memory channels are organized as follows:

    Processor 1
    channel 0: memory sockets A1 and A5
    channel 1: memory sockets A2 and A6
    channel 2: memory sockets A3 and A7
    channel 3: memory sockets A4 and A8
    Processor 2
    channel 0: memory sockets B1
    channel 1: memory sockets B2
    channel 2: memory sockets B3
    channel 3: memory sockets B4

So based on this I'm assuming I can do this?

    A1 - 32GB
    B1 - 32GB
    A2 - 32GB
    B2 - 32GB
    A3 - 16GB
    B3 - 16GB
    A4 - 16GB
    B4 - 16GB

    Does this mean I cannot use A5, A6, A7 or A8?

Does processor 2 really have less sockets than Processor 1?

R430 have 8 DIMM slots for CPU1 and 4 DIMM slots for CPU2. You can try populating 32GB DIMM's on A1,A2,B1 and B2 and remaining slots 16GB DIMM's.
